[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Once more our common town neighbor – Hooded crow (Corvus cornix). My first photo meeting with this species took place in Alushta (Crimea) and I had written then that our Odessa crows were more well-fed and sleek, solid and well looking (see Bully).

However, only now I could take photo of Odessa representative. I tested the lens near my city apartments among tall trees at poor light conditions. May be under sunbeams it would be looked more solid.

Unlike the pigeons and town sparrows these birds are not so cooperative (for shooting). They spend near people a lot of time and you can come nearer to them so close. They are very clever, suspicious and cautious birds. And I have noticed if your have a camera or something else in your hands they fly away in a moment. Or I am not luck photographer.

About Hooded crow you can see here:

The Hooded Crow (Corvus cornix) (sometimes called Hoodiecrow) is a Eurasian bird species in the crow genus. Widely distributed, it is also known locally as Scotch Crow, Danish Crow, and Grey Crow in Ireland, which is what its Welsh name, Brân Lwyd, translates as. Found across northern, eastern and southeastern Europe, and the Middle East, it is an ashy grey bird with black head, throat, wings, tail and thigh feathers, as well as a black bill, eyes and feet. Like other corvids it is an omnivorous and opportunistic forager and feeder.

It is so similar in morphology and habits to the Carrion Crow (Corvus corone) that for many years they were considered by most authorities to be merely geographical races of one species. The fact that hybridization was observed where their ranges overlapped added weight to this view. However, since 2002, the Hooded Crow has been elevated to full species status after closer observation; the hybridisation was less than expected and hybrids had decreased vigour. Within the Hooded Crow species itself, four subspecies are recognized, with one, the Mesopotamian Crow, possibly distinct enough to warrant species status itself…

Hi Alexei,

A nice and good capture of this hooded crow, with good colors and details,I must say that I actually see only now that you have changed camera, but a good one as well I can see,can imagine you are experimenting a lot again,

Thanks for sharing mf

Hello Alexei
A beautiful bird with striking and prominent details. The black beak and polka dot eye is remarkable and very eye-catching. I like the composition and the view from the side in which you captured it. This way it displays the plumage in detail. This bird certainly has very hefty feathers. The black and white is a perfect match and lovely combination. All together a splendid photograph with much to appreciate, and nothing that I could find fault with. Thanks for sharing.

merhaba my friend
good capture of this bird
i like POV, blurred BG, light, sharpness and details

A non sector and a common share name..We have a large farming town here by the name of Odessa..flat wheat lands as far as one can see.....and this bird along with its fine image comes as quite a surprise to me. I seem to be greeted each day with something new, something to learn and from so many good people such as you Alexei. This is a fine composition and a nice chance to get something you have not done before...Very nice sir..Much appreciated..oh yes...Odessa WA has a large number of Russian immigrants..I wonder????

Hello Alexei,
this is perfect capture for one of the most clever birds and it is in your usual quality. In many times, closer capture very hard for the crows. You managed to capture it very nicely. Superb sharp focus, great composition and POV. eyes contact and OOF great. good notes. Thanks for sharing, best wishes friend

it was not an easy one Alexei
and then I mean the difficult light in the shot, but even that you made a fine photo here with a fine details and a super sharpnes, good photojob here my friend, have a nice evening.

This is an handsome-looking crow, much more interesting than ours with his two-tone coloring (as opposed to our plain black ones).
Really fine details and good profile pose.

Hello Alex,

What a nice portret of the bird you have made. There are so many grey color tones in your photo showing well the plumage of the bird. The shaining beak looks great. Image is very sharp so that even small feathers can be well seen.

Hi Alexei

Excellent pov and great detail. As you say, crows are notoriously wary of people - especially id=f they are carrying anything that looks like a gun.

Hello Alexei,
Excellent capture with sharp details obtained with your nes Nikon D700.
Considering your full frame camera and the short focal lense: only 200mm, you were very close to the crow or you have cropped the photo?
Best regards

Wow, what a cool looking Crow. I have never seen this species before. Your exposure is perfect, you exposed the blacks and grays perfectly. Great notes as well.

Hello Alexei
I had never seen a crow like this with that beautiful grey plumage. I still wonder at your skill in the capture of birds, well, in fact I don't know why, maybe you are not a lucky photographer but for sure that you are a very good photographer. It's true that normally under sunbeams the pictures look better, but I find this one wonderful and most interesting.
Thank you very much for sharing, dear friend.

First, my apologies for my delayed reciprocation to your kind critique on my new picture, Alexei. The work keeps me a bit too busy these days.
This is a remarkable capture of a grey and white crow from Odessa. Very efficient use of the day light and outstanding details and colours.
The crows in our country are mostly black, so it is an educational experience for me to see one from your part of the world.
Thanks and regards.

Hello Alex,
Corvus cornix is a very interesting bird, very intelligent, like you write it in your note. This one doesn't have a severe look for me , just cautious, you never know what comes out of Alexei's black box! Simple and vivid picture, with fine sharpness and good framing.

Hello Alexei,

What a great picture for a first shot! I like the feathers' details and the sharpness of the beak. Personally my best Crows pictures were took from my car because it is true that there are very intelligent and suspicious! Congratulations for taking that nice shots!

Another very nice shot with your new toys and i see you're getting more and more comfortable with the speed of this lens, too.
Surely, a good equipment in your hands can only produce an impeccable sharpness, but i also like the way you've handled the overall exposure here, getting some nice patterns and colors from the BG, too.
Very nice side POV and good no to go with everything on the top.

Hi Alexei,
a very fine capture of this Hooded Crow.
Apparently they're in my country too but I've never seen one before let alone get an excellent shot like this.
The amount of detail is superb!
Excellent composition.
Well exposed.
Nice DOF.

Well done!

Hi Alexei,
Your Ukrainian crows are very different and nicer than ours :) I like this mix of black and white which make them look less severe than our black ones :) You captured the bird in a nice pose and as usual details are very sharp. Exposure looks fine to me as there is no sign of OE on the white which is not easy to do. I would be curious to see if a little contrast could be added... Well done!

Fascinating bird...love the pattern/color.
Great pose! Perfect details and distinction in the plumage.

Hi Alexei,

Hello Alexei,

You are too hard on yourself.
This is a very good photo of the Hooded Crow.
I see them around the towns but rarely in the countryside where I live.
You have captured excellent details of its plummage, clearly defining the the different coloured areas.
The well chosen dof has kept all the f/g images in sharp focus. Well done.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Alexei,

Very sharp & detailed Alexei, a great POV of the crow..
Good comp & natural looking colors. It's well seen from the soft BG also.
Only nit are the light spots BG, but a very minor thing.
Well done,

Hi Alexei,
a nice and special shot of the bird.Sharp against the nice soft background. He is really serious about being photographed.
Nicely presented with the environment intact and impressive.

NB: With regards to the lens you mentioned, it is an old lens which is a mirror-lens. I bought it second-hand. That lens is manual focus, and quite difficult a bit to compose.

Hello Alexei !
I wish we had these Hooded Crows, here in France, but each time I only see the black ones. I love the silvery color of their plumage, it's very beautiful. You have captured this one in a great pose, with excellent sharp details, natural colors, wonderful composition and POV. A perfect shot, as usual from you. Very well done !
