Better known backyard inhabitants:

The 8 mm long male Oedemera beetle is not rare (Coleoptera; Oedemeridae; Oedemera femorata (Scop.); Gemeiner Schenkelkäfer). It sits on a wild growing Knautia, eating pollen.

ID: there are 11 species of Oedemera in my region, one other (O. podagrariae (L.) resembles this one in color but has yellow forelegs. Note that only the males of Oedemera have the thick hind femurs. The german site www.koleopterologie.de/gallery is of great help.

Technical stuff: Of the two macro flashes armed with light dispersers I held one by hand from the side.

Hello Dietrich
Although this insect might not be rare for you, it is a rare sight for me, and a most beautiful one to. It looks as if this beetle is wearing an evening suite. The two fat hind legs fascinate me and it is very interesting to look at. The detail of the beetle as well as the flower is excellent and well presented. The clarity of the anthers is first class. Thanks for sharing this image which is well focused, super sharp and well framed.
Kind regards.

How sharp and nicely bright is this picture. I like the pov, and the details in the anthers of the flower. The bug is contrasting in it and to be true, I sometimes wish to be a bug to be in such a colourful world! Thank you for this nice macro,

Hello Dietrich!
I am really happy that you desieded to show us not a Cerambydidae beetle but something much more rare :)
Nice capture of this Oedemera species. You kept very good DOF and clarity. Colours are very vivid and optimistic, especially when I look through the window ;)

Hi Dietrich,

Nice macro, Dietrich. Lovely details on this beetle. You did a marvelous job on the lighting -- so well it is impreceptable. But the color of the flower really makes this superb.

Lieber Dieter,

Hi Dietrich,
Excellent macro, I've never used anything for my macro other than natural light, or the Sigma ringflash..Can you believe it ;}
So I appreciate how well you control the light here - With outstanding results.
Well done!

Hi Dietrich.
First-class close- up of a very nice scene. Both flower and beetle are represented perfectly. I like upper POV and perfect details of the insect. As usual sharpness and details are ultimate. All featured of lovely coloured flower are reproduced so nicely. Well done and kind regards.

Hi Dietrich,

A very nice shot, very sharp and I like the color of the flower, sets off the insect nicely. I would not have realized that this insect was a beetle, very different than most Coleoptera.

Ciao Dietrich, splendid beetle with fine details and excellent sharpness, lovely composition with beautiful flower, fantastic colors, very well done, ciao Silvio
