Nigma walckenaeri

Dutch name: Groen kaardertje
French name: Dictyne verte

Nigma walckenaeri is a green, cribellate spider up to 5 millimetres long, the biggest of the family Dictynidae. While most of the body is a bit yellowish, the abdomen is shining green, which makes it rather distinct and hard to confuse with other species. Males have an elevated head region. Adults occur from August to October, in buildings up to December. These spiders are mostly found in gardens or on walls (often on big leaves such as lilac or feral grapevine), in warmer regions also on forest edges. The green colour makes it almost invisible. The spider catches insects, sometimes larger than itself, in its web, which it builds on the surface of leaves. Th female hides the up to 7 millimetre long eggsac on a place distant from its retreat.

In Great Britain, it was until 1993 only found from London and the Home Counties. It was possibly originally imported into Kew Gardens.

(source wikipedia)

Perhaps I found an explanation to the picture (male and female together):

The females of this family of spiders are very gentle wiht the males. After mating they often live together for a couple of weeks, until he dies. Only then she will eat him, but not always. (source: gardensafari.net)

I had to increase the contrast quite a bit, otherwise this spider is quite invisible under the web.

Another picture of this spider in WS.

Bonjour Marie-Christine,
Anne

Hi Marie

Good shot of this hungry female. I hope she did wait a couple of weeks! Not much fun being a male spider is it!
Good contrast, composition and sharpness.

Chris

Ciao Marie Christine,
spettacolare cattura di questa coppia di ragni, eccellenti POV e DOF, bellissima la composizione con BG della foglia che esalta i dettagli, i colori hanno una bella luminosità..
TFS.
Maurizio

A difficult but excellent macro shot Marie, it shouldn't be easy to show the almost transparent greenish legs against a green BG behind the lacy web of the spider! The level of sharpness is quite high in this image, considering the miniscule sizes of the spiders. A fine photography indeed my friend.
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hello Marie,
Considering this little green spider is so small, this is a fine sharp macro taken from a good dorsal POV that seems to show the female devouring her husband. I don't think spiders embrace their spouses for any purpose other than food!
TFS this fine interesting image,
Cheers,
Ivan

Hi Marie.
Excellent close-up of a very attractive scene and very interesting and useful note for the picture. You have reflected of details of the scene (insects, leaf and web) superbly. I like effective use of flash – it always gives nice details and increases sharpness. POV and cropping are impressive too. Well done and kind wishes. TFS.
