Hi All,
This Short-eared Owl blessed me with his patience, allowing me to approach him to within a meter and a half at one point. I have put a closeup in the workshop that is uncropped. Now that is TRUST.

Short-eared Owl
Asio flammeus

General Description

By Nora Bryan

The Short-eared Owl is a denizen of open grasslands and parklands across southern and central Alberta. This somewhat nomadic bird searches for places where voles are numerous. In vole plague years, large numbers of short-eared owls might set up residence in the area.

This owl may be seen most often at dawn or dusk in open grasslands, brushy places or marshlands. Sometimes a cleared forest makes a suitable habitat. Low swooping flight, sometimes with hovering pauses are clues to identifying this medium-sized owl.

Voles are the chief ingredients in this owl's diet, and the owl's numbers are closely tied to the abundance of this rodent. Birds and other small animals are substituted in years when vole populations are small.

The Short-eared Owl nests on the ground in the cover of reeds and grasses. Four to as many as fourteen round eggs are laid in slight depression lined with dried grasses and feathers from the female's breast. Young are incubated for 21 to 28 days and the young are ready to fly in roughly another month.

Hello Rick,
A very nice composition and with a good pov.
Very nice pose of your model and taken with very good sharpness and details.
Nice light and the yellow of the eye is very good to see.
Best regards Siggi

Hi Rick!

Your picture simply is fabulous! Not only because the Owl is a magnificent bird, but especially because you have captured it in such a perfect manner. The picture is crystal clear and shows rich details. I'm also impressed by the colour and lighting management. The haulmes in the foreground and the nicely and naturally blurred background give the picture a fine depth of view.

Difficult to do better...

Kind regards

Hello Rick,
This is a great and unusual view of an Owl. I like the way it has turned the head showing one eye and the hind plumage is beautiful. All sharply captured in lovely colours. A very nice background too!
Many thanks and best wishes, Ulla

Wonderful plumage detail and markings.
These owl shots are super.

Ciao Rick,

Hi Rick.
Once more fantastic shot of the beautiful owl. Especially I like colourful and very pictorial BG. It's clear sharpness and details of the bird are awesome and its pose and head turning are sweet. I am sure you are not right because of sharing of an amazing owl portrait as WS. It deserves the separate post. However, my congratulations. Terrific works.

You are an unassuming person..Having been nearby, there are no "bad vibes" coming from ya guy...so this may be true as in many of your photos...I think animals have a w2ay of picking up on people in different ways we cannot detect the mechanism...some can do this and some cannot...
Crisp, clear and actually quite a pretty pose!

Hi Rick,

I always knew you had a way with animals - but how did you get so close to this owl??? I love both views. This profile is terrific with the shining yellow eye and the white of the face. The colors and details of his plummage are beautiful. The composition is fantastic.

Hello Rick,
This is a very beautiful Owl, It looks like she's wearing
a mask to hide from the cold :) Great POV, excellent sharpness
..Well done

Hi Rick,
this is simply a gorgeous capture taken in a beautiful light and even with the slightly blurred area with the grasses in the way the image suffers not in the slightest.I really would love to see this owl with my own two eyes as I have yet to.The workshop photo shows a large amount of detail and the bird is distinctive with that heart shaped face border.Raptors are easily amongst the most beautiful of all predator species and fierce looking as well. Thanks Rick for giving us this view today.Do you have a private menagerie located somewhere that lets you get such variety and excellent photos of wildlife or is it you have luck beyond belief, tell us your secrets!A new one for my theme.
