House Sparrow or (Passer domesticus)

I took this picture three months ago at the northern side of Watsons Bay, Sydney.
Being myself a shadow chaser, I was captivated by the pose of the bird while facing the sun.

Handheld with IS on, crop, some RAW adjustments and image size for TN.

Shutter speed: 1/800
Aperture value: f/7.1
Focal length: 300mm
AF mode: One shot
Metering mode: Pattern
Flash: Off
ISO 320

House Sparrows are actually large finches. They are usually seen in small to medium-sized groups, but may occur in huge numbers. The male has a conspicuous grey crown, black face and throat, and dark black and brown upperparts. The remainder of the under parts are pale grey-brown. When breeding, the black of the throat extends to the chest and upper belly.

The bill also changes from brown to black. The female is slightly paler than the male and lacks the grey crown and black face, instead having a pale buff eye stripe. Young House Sparrows are similar to the adult female, but are duller with some mottling on the crown, and have a darker bill.

The House Sparrow was introduced from Britain between 1863 and 1870. Firstly in Victoria, but later into other areas including Sydney, Brisbane and Hobart. It quickly established itself in urban areas throughout eastern Australia.

Living with humans
Although the introduction of the House Sparrow was deliberate, and welcomed by many people, it quickly became a major pest, and a reward was paid by the government for the birds and their eggs. Today, the species is so well established in the east that no amount of effort will exterminate the ever-expanding population. The birds however have so far been prevented from establishing themselves in Western Australia, with every bird observed being deliberately destroyed.

Scientific classification:
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Aves
Order: Passeriformes
Family: Passeridae
Genus: Passer
Species: P. domesticus

Hi Jose,
wow does that bird species get around as it seems to me they live everywhere in the world and that wasn't always the case. Here in Canada they were brought over sometime during the 19th century by Europeans and we have been stuck with them ever since.Though they are common they are still attractive birds with a nice variety of colour and textures to their feathers. This photo shows well the colour and details of this bird's plumage and the only thing that could be better is if the exposure were darker by -1/3 or -2/3 ev to preserve the high lights better.Still a worthwhile upload you presented us today and thank you sir for sharing it with us.I have tried a workshop for this photo for another take on it.I hope you like it. Bob

Ola Jose,
Beautiful capture of the little house sparrow. I'm not a bird expert but I do enjoy seeing them and their songs. It looks like I see this type all around, and never pay that close attention to it. Here, I can see it very well. Good sharpness and clarity, but I think the contrast and saturation is a little on the intense side. Otherewise an excellent shot. Thanks

Hi Jose.
First of all thanks for warm congratulations.
It is very interesting to see the almost same subject. You managed to represent the sparrow in all its beauty. Fantastic 3D-image of the splendid specimen. Its details are precise. Colours are rich and fine. I also like the pictured scene so much. Grey stone and alive yellow green triangles create an amazing impressive BG. Bravo. Superb, full of lights. Colours and life picture.

Hi Jose!

You present us a simple and plain, yet very pleasant picture. The pose of the bird and the expression this generates is nice. I also believe you have well composed the image. I agree with Bob when he says that the highlights are a bit too harsh. I even would say that the saturation has been set at its limit, the shadow of the bird is almost blue.

Kind regards

Hi Jose,

Looks like you had some harsh light to deal with but a really nice capture of this little House Sparrow, the colours a very well saturated, really crisp and sharp. Good seperation from the OOF background. all the best,

Cheers Rick :)

Ciao Jose Miguel,

Hello Jose,

Hello José Miguel,
Fine sharp capture of a male House Sparrow taken in fine lighting and from an unusual POV. The composition to include its shadow is pleasing on the rock against a fine OOF natural BG.
TFS this fine one from Sydney,

No es que sea de tus mejores fotos José Miguel jeje, pero aprovecho para saludarte , más viendo que estás por esas lejanas tierras, antípodas casi para mí.
Un abrazo: Josep Ignasi

It is beautiful and splendid.

Hi dear Jose ,
As always so nice shot from you.
Lovelt pose ane great details.
Excellent work.

Hi Jose Miguel,
It is always interesting to see that this specie of Sparrow looks the same all around the world! The shadow is interesting and this is a good idea but personally, I think that the lack of space in front of the bird has a little something disturbing and for that reason I must say that I prefer the WS version. Anyway, it’s all a matter of personal taste I guess and the picture remains well done with nice details, colors and lightning. Thanks,

Hi Jose,
Une saturation peut-être un peu forte mais une belle attitude et un beau cadrage. La netteté est au rendez-vous

Hi Jose,

very good composition with the bird good framed in the picture.
Beautiful colours and lots details in the feathers.

Hi Jose,
This is a one of the best friend in the passerines genus to people i guess. i'm happy to see it at a country which so far away from Turkiye! i like much the posture like statue on that blurry green bg. Great sharpness, pov and framing!

By the way it is sad to read that about goverment activities on them. i don't understand why they look them as a pest. We live with the sparrows without any complaint here in Turkiye.

Best regards,

Hello Jose Miguel,
Nice capture of this male House Sparrow, excellent
composition and pov, very good sharpness and depth of
feild, beautiful colors and nice catchlight.

Hello Jose Miguel,

I'm surprised that your House sparrow looks so similar to our at the other end of the world!

2 things maybe: the exposure is a little bit too high and there is a little bit too much contrast.

I like the nice bg enhancing the bird and you get a nice pov but it is just a little pity that the bird head is not more turned toward you.

Bye and TFS,

Hi Jose Miguel

A pleasing and lovely capture of this little sparrow. Even in their commonness and wide spread presence they remain unique and wonderful little birds. This is a good side view you've captured here with lovely colours and sharp details.

Well done and TFS.

PS. Pardon me for my short comment as I am rather pushed for time this year. It is more important that I want to thank you for the wonderful friendship you extended to me (and Anna) this past 2008. Also, I want to wish you and your loved ones a joyous Christmas and a wonderful New Year. May this Christ-fest and the imminent 2009 bring you everything that is beautiful and admirable, provide all your needs with blissful abundance, present you with that which is edifying and inspiring, grant you blessed peace and harmony, and bestow upon you a myriad of worthwhile pleasures and breathtaking moments with close friends and dear family.

Hi Jose Miguel

A very beautiful capture of this house sparrow here, my friend!
I'm sorry you don't post so often anymore...i would like to see your progress with your new equipment...
Anyway, i really like this shot, having excellent sharpness, very saturated colors and a very good choice of DOF.
Although the light was quite harsh here, i think you managed to balance the exposure very nicely and obtain a dynamic result.

Allo Jose Miguel, I love the house sparrows a lot and TN helped me discover their beauty even more. This is a stunning portrait of a simple bird, the light is simply fantastic, warm and bright, with a beautiful shadow in the back of the bird. We see the many details of the feathers and the eye lit by the sun is so alert. Thank you!

Hola Jose Miguel

A very beautiful shot, Jose..I love the way you've used the light.
Thanks so much for the share!

Hallo Jose
I have seen many of these birds on the gallery, but there beauty never seems to amaze me. Although it is not a spectacular bird, it carries across a special charming manner that makes it very attractive. The light shining on the bird itself, creates a warm and sunny feeling looking at the image. It also brings out the beautiful rich colours of the feathers. I love the shadow of the bird on the rock. Thanks for sharing this lovely image.
Best regards.

Hello Jose,

Fine details in this little fellow!
Interesting point of view to give details in the plumage, crisp and colourful...
A well balanced composition, the strong diagonal in the background is a plus!
