Southern Crowned Pigeon
Goura scheepmakeri sclaterii

The Southern Crowned Pigeon, Goura scheepmakeri, is a large, approximately 75cm long, terrestrial pigeon confined to southern lowland forests of New Guinea. It has a bluish-grey plumage with elaborate blue lacy crests, red iris and very deep maroon breast. Both sexes are similar.
There are two subspecies of the Southern Crowned Pigeon, differentiated by their shoulder and belly colorations. Goura scheepmakeri sclateri of southwest New Guinea with maroon shoulders and blue-grey belly, and the nominate race Goura scheepmakeri scheepmakeri of southeast New Guinea with blue-grey shoulders and maroon below.
This species was first discovered new to science by Otto Finsch who found a live bird received from the dealer C. Scheepmaker in Amsterdam Zoo and named it after him.
Being tame and heavily hunted for its meat and plumes, the Southern Crowned Pigeon is evaluated as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

This photo was taken at the Bali Bird Park.

Hello Manyee,
This is a superb capture of this gorgeous bird with its beak full of nesting material!
I love its pose and the wonderful crown. Excellent focus on the red eye too and wonderful details and colours. A nice background that makes it stand out very niely.
Many thanks and cheers, Ulla

That is the most amazing crown of feathers. It looks like delicate snowflakes or frost patterns. The red eye makes a great focal point and the beak full of sharp grasses adds a lot of interest. I like the way the dark background isolates the subject. Nice work

Bonjour Manyee, always splendid your shots!! and mainly this one. I like the association of nesting grasses and the beautiful "hair"!! congratulations, Didier.

Hello Manyee !
What a strange bird, I love all these feathers on his head ! I suppose he's bulding his nest, you caught him at the best moment. Excellent details, and I also like his pose, the composition of the picture, and you made excellent use of your flash, even if the bird's eyes are red - not a big problem. Very well done !

PS : The picture on your intro is really cute ! :-)

Dear Manyee,
a lovely and bizarre pigeon that you have encountered and presented here so well.
I like the charming pose of presenting the dry leaves the pigeon has collected for its nest.
With all my best wishes to you for a Happy New Year!
