This was taken at nine in the morning when the temperature was 35F. That is cold for Tucson where the people and birds are more accustomed to 100+ than they are to weather close to the freezing point.

Greater Roadrunner

The legendary roadrunner is famous for its distinctive appearance, its ability to eat rattlesnakes and its preference for scooting across the American deserts, as popularized in Warner Bros. cartoons.

The roadrunner is a large, black-and-white, mottled ground bird with a distinctive head crest. It has strong feet, a long, white-tipped tail and an oversized bill.

It ranges in length from 20 to 24 inches from the tip of its tail to the end of its beak. It is a member of the Cuckoo family (Cuculidae), characterized by feet with 2 forward toes and 2 behind.

When the roadrunner senses danger or is traveling downhill, it flies, revealing short, rounded wings with a white crescent. But it cannot keep its large body airborne for more than a few seconds, and so prefers walking or running (up to 17 miles per hour) usually with a clownish gait.

The roadrunner feeds almost exclusively on other animals, including insects, scorpions, lizards, snakes, rodents and other birds. Up to 10 % of its winter diet may consist of plant material due to the scarcity of desert animals at that time of the year.

Because of its lightening quickness, the roadrunner is one of the few animals that preys upon rattlesnakes. Using its wings like a matador's cape, it snaps up a coiled rattlesnake by the tail, cracks it like a whip and repeatedly slams its head against the ground till dead.

It then swallows its prey whole, but is often unable to swallow the entire length at one time. This does not stop the roadrunner from its normal routine. It will continue to meander about with the snake dangling from its mouth, consuming another inch or two as the snake slowly digests.

A roadrunner life does have its dangers. Roadrunners are occasionally preyed upon by hawks, house cats, raccoons, rat snakes, bullsnakes, skunks, and, coyotes eat nestlings and eggs. During the winter months, many succumb to freezing, icy weather.

I know how he feels. After snowing for several hours we are now getting freezing rain! It is so treacherous. I guess I'll be house bound tomorrow. I 've never seen such a fluffed up roadrunner. It is a really amusing image. Sharpness and exposure are well managed.

Hi Jane,

what a great picture are this from the roadrunner.
Beautiful colors and razor sharpness as usual by you.
One little point, a pity it seems beneauth by his wings a little overexposed.
I am always honest.
But overall very good picture and I like very much the pose and plumage.

I have been through winters on the desert..and I told you of one when it snowed in TUSCON....Lost a tent...1976...
Terrible mess...I see this bird is fluffed up to withstand the cold...nice moment capture...My birds are gone with one lone exception this AM at the feeder which was blowing in windy snow at 3 degrees F! I took video!

Hi Jane

Great shot of this roadrunner on your porch. That weather must be great. It gets that cold here in western Sydney in winter, though by nine in teh morning its usually warmed up a bit. Great fluffed up comosition and sharpness.

I hope you and your family have a safe and happy festive season.

Hi Jane,
What an image !!
I almost missed this one....this is all about timing and the universe conspired to be present right there , with the camera and capture it for posterity.Superb pose..the details on the plumage is more vivid in this form of capture..every little cell in that body seems to be standing up...Wow..and that eye translates its emotion every bit...very good PoV.
Would love to add this to my "unforgettable theme".
Thanks and cheers

Hi Jane.

I like this one and I noticed birds do this a lot in the morning. The capture is so well timed as the action did not last a long time. Such fine details well executed against the blurry background.

Well done and best regards,
