Hi friends. Let me take this opportunity to wish you all a merry festive season, which ever faith you follow and a happy and safe New Year. Thanks for all your critiques, comments and correspondence. And I look forward to see you all here again next year, busily posting away those magical shots from around this amazing planet.

Today’s post is a male of the eastern race of the Variegated Fairy-wren (Malurus lamberti lamberti). There five races or subspecies of this wren each having more or less blue, some have purple or lavender, but all have red shoulders.

This race inhabits the moist forests and woodlands of eastern Australia. They live in small family groups with one dominant male and usually several females. The previous seasons’ offspring may also hang around to help out in feeding the next seasons young. They are entirely terrestrial, rarely venturing above 1 metre from the ground and always inhabiting the densest vegetation patches, often along ephemeral watercourses.

They are notoriously difficult to photograph, and not easily enticed out of the undergrowth by squeaking. This time I was lucky and the they came to investigate my squeaking. In the 20 odds years I’ve trying to shoot these guys this is the best I’ve ever done and I was quite pleased with the result.

Compare the plumage with the Superb Fairy-wren I posted a couple of weeks ago here.

Hallo Chris
What a beauty! Such a wonderful display of bright colours lighting up my screen. The different colours resemble the different colours used to decorate a Christmas tree. This is really very eye-catching a suits this dainty little bird. You managed to capture this beauty in a lovely pose with clear and visible details. The details on the plumage are so clear and precise it looks like it has been drawn by hand. Great focus, sharpness and composition. A delightful image that really can be associated with the fairy world out there. A stylish bird. Thanks for sharing.
Best regards

A great shot Chris!
I got some idea how difficult these small strikingly coloured birds are to photograph and though I have tried several times, I have not succeeded in getting a fair shot let alone one as good as this of the Variegated Fairy Wren.
This is great in all respects, but most of all the composition against the fern BG and the POV showing its colours at their best.
Happy Christmas to you and yours and all the best for 2009!

Hi Chris

Merhaba Chris,
Bu gerçekten enfes bir kuş fotoğrafı. Doygunluk biraz fala kaçmış gibi görünse de kompozisyonun muhteşemliğine dokunmamış. Renkler süper. Emeğine sağlık.

A perfect name for this little bird! I can just imagine how difficult it is to get a shot. You did it this time - colors are amazing and so many of them - sharp details of the face and feathers. I love the tail standing straight up. Happy Holidays to you and your family.

Thank you for posting this amazing picture of this astonishing bird. Being the wrens so hyperactive and fast moving bird, I imagine getting such a clear well composed shot was a lot of hard work. Congratulations! and thank you for sharing.

Feliz Navidad

Hello Chris,
Seasons greetings to you and yours. This incredibly beautiful little fellow is amazingly tiny. Your image has been composed very well and with your camera work you have captured the wonderful details and colors of its plumage. Thanks for this fine work Chris and I'm looking forward to your postings in 2009.

Sorry, Chris, I have been a bit too busy shifting household and could not get to your pictures as promptly as I should have.
The Variegated Fairy Wren in your picture is really very handsone with all those rainbow colours on it. Your POV gives a fine impression of those colours.
The image is quite sharp and well composed.
TFS and regards.

Hello Chris.

Hi Chris,
It's a beautiful bird with striking plumage colors. TFS
Best wishes,

Hi Chris,

Wow, what a little jewel! A beautiful composition too, the fern leaf complements the bird nicely. Nice color and detail. Good job!

Hi Chris
I love the colour on your Fairy-wren. He has a very long tail compared to the Wrens around here. His colour is really striking. You did a great job photographing this little guy as I know who quickly they move around.

I see you captured him in Wollami National Park. I have a photo of a Wollami Pine, would this be from the same area?
TFS Janice

Just getting back into looking after a time. Wow. Thanks for showing this one. How can just a little bird look so beautiful? It is just a wonder!

I love the way the tail feather is parallel to the fern stem.
