The next photo in line of my day at Aekingerzand is of course a sunset. No matter what you do, at the end of the day the sun will always set.

I came to this spot about half an hour before the sun would set and used some of the time to make some photos with the floodlight of the last rays. A few minutes before the actual sunset I started to set up my composition by taking an small guess on the trajectory of the sun and the options I had to move the tripod. It pretty much came down to this spot because it had a good combination of foregrond element, a nice touch on the reflection of the sky on the ice and water and the position of the sun between two trees.

My goal was to place the horizon in the center of the photo so to utilize the mirroring effect to the fullest. Most of the light in this photo is on the left side of the composition, so I had to position my grad ND in an angled position. This did cause me to lose some details in the far left landscape. but did allow for the best exposure balance.

Hi neighbour Nick ;-)
this shot is amazing, what a great moment, this would be worth to make a poster to hang it in the livingroom!
Fantastic, great work, thanks and greetings

Hi Niek

This is what i've been waiting to see...the glorious sunset from that lovely day out!
And my wait was worth it...it's stunning!
You "guessed" well where the sun would touch the horizon and therefore your composition is wonderful: the splendid sky and its reflection take the most of the frame but still leave out room for the beautiful tree silhouettes and the FG reeds. Surely, the nice curve of the water acts as a lead-in line very nicely, too.
I perfectly understand you having to tilt the grad filter...i do that sometimes, too. By the way, which grad filter did you use here? 0.6 or 0.9?
Anyway, the result is impeccable! The tones and soft transition from one color to another in both the sky and the reflection are brilliant and complete this superb presentation.

BRAVO, TFS and Happy Holidays!

Hi Niek,
Exposure control, colors and the light are beautiful. I like the scene you captured a lot. Well composed photo taken with a good POV. TFS
All the best,

Hello Niek !
Wow, this is so beautiful - the kind of picture I would like to print and hang on my wall, if it was mine. Composition and POV are perfect, you made the best choices possible. And such a wonderful palette of colors, ranging frome pale yellow to dark blue, and those beautiful clouds, and I also like the mood and the atmsophere of this picture. Very well done !

hallo Niek

een prachtige foto
mooi scherp en fijn van kleur

groetjes lou

Hallo Niek,

This is quite the effective shot, I love the reflections on the very thin surface of ice. Well done!

hello Niek
Congratulation for this sunset, a very fantastic shot ! the shapes ofthe trees, the reflection on the water and thecolors are great

Hello Niek,
Good spot to have this beautiful sunset well captured with a good depth! the reflection on the frozen ice is really nice with great sharpness, good colour and details
many thanks for the sharing

Beautiful image, you've adapted your technique to the task at hand with excellent results. I appreciate the notes on how managed this one.
Excellent exposure, comp, and colors..
Very well done & Merry Christmas Niek.

Hello Niek

A lovely horizon with beautiful light and silhouettes.
Well composed in the frame.
There is a wonderful symmetry with the cloudy sky and textured surface of the water.
Of course the POPV was well planned and thought out.
Great job.

Hallo niek,

mooie sfeerplaat van het aekingerzand bij zonsondergang waar ik ook al diverse keren geweest ben.
Je woont ook al in een mooie provincie.

Prettige kerstdagen en een voorspoedig nieuwjaar.

Ciao Niek, fascinating sunset landscape with splendid reflections, great colors, very well done, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, ciao Silvio

Wow, indeed a perfect picture with the horizon in the middle, with frozen reflection of the trees.I really like it!
Kind regards, Oana
and Happy Holidays!

Oh... this is "yummy" Niek. Yes, the sun will will always set, but not always with such a grand display. I love the dark curve and of course that gorgeous light and the way it shimmers on the ice. I think another thing that works FOR this very effective composition is that the orange, bright reflection part connects visually with the bright sky leaving the bottom third of the image darker and the upper two thirds brighter. Lovely work...

Happy Christmas to you and the family!

Hi Niek

I quite fancy this dark moody image of the sunset over Aekingerzand. I just had to chuckle at the simplistic and utter truth captured in your words, "No matter what you do, at the end of the day the sun will always set". It reminded me of the words in a Bob Dylan song "It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" saying, "He not busy being born is busy dying" (also very true).

In your notes you have already adequately addressed all the aspects concerning the composition, and the colours and details are great.

Well done MF and TFS.

PS. I am rather pushed for time this year so please pardon me for my short comment. It is more important that I want to thank you for the wonderful friendship you extended to me (and to Anna) during this past 2008. Also, I want to wish you and your loved ones a joyous Christmas and a wonderful New Year. May this Christ-fest and the imminent 2009 bring you everything that is beautiful and admirable, provide all your needs with blissful abundance, present you with that which is edifying and inspiring, grant you blessed peace and harmony, and bestow upon you a myriad of worthwhile pleasures and breathtaking moments with close friends and dear family.

Note: Please make sure to convey the above wishes to your parents (but especially to Rein) as well. Tell him I say, "Hello, old friend".

Hello Niek,
This is a wonderful sunset! I love the icy water, the shape of the clouds and the light is really beautiful. Really cool!
Many thanks, Ulla

Nicely done, Niek. I like the "subtleness" of this one -- the color, the trees, the exposure, the details, even the ice. Everything is there but everything seems refined. Well done.
Happy New Year!

Hi Niek

You obviously put a lot of thought into your compositions (unlike me!) and this certainly shows. You caught the light perfectly and had some wonderful tree silhouettes and reflections as well. I love the colours of this wintery light.

All the best for 2009

Hi Niek,

Since the tree post i commented, i missed to see this and all post after that. This afternoon i visit your site again. i remember divid noton said about composition-the combination of form...and i think for me you are among the finest one.I like the exposure in this photo, very pleasant. The rule of third horizontaly is great idea. Thanks for the useful note.TFS.

I love the simplicity of this composition. Pure, clean and peaceful with sense of solitude. The sunset light is magical, very beautiful and soft colors, the cloud is wonderfully spreading across the sky, the reflection in the lake is a plus. Beautiful like a painting. Thanks.

Hi Niek

Thought I would come by and see what everyone had been doing and found this.

I know it is some time since you have posted it, but I really like it. It is just so very much 'my' type of shot and I am a sucker for sunsets and sunrises...

Great composition leading to the right. From my point of view it works really well and the patches of unfrozen water add that little extra to the picture. Colours are excellent.
