First of all a Merry Christmas, dear friends.

This photo is captured at 8:22:22
Altitude 1070 m
S20 16.241 E15 02.122
Gravel road M76/C35
Coming from Khorixas on my way to visit the Himba in Kamanjab(and cancelling the Petrified Forest Nature Reserve and the Welwitschia Mirabilis Plants)
It's taken close to Fransfontein and Mt Twyfelberg/Franzfontein.

First I thought these were young Tawny eagles but afterwards I verified this through the "Etosha map"(take into account this isn't Etosha) and verified on the web and I think these are Yellow-billed kites.
But I'm not convinced. I'm sure somebody will identify these birds of prey.

I think they were busy learning to fly and using the gravel road for instance to land or take off...?

Hi Annick and Happy Christmas to you also. I hope the new year brings you (and therefore us too) more great photos. I always look forward to your next post.

I am very impressed that evaluative metering did so well with these dark birds against the sky. Three is always an effective number in a composition.

Hi Annick,
I can't be sure of the species, I am not so familiar with the area and the raptors around. But the scene you captured is great.
Merry Christmas

Hi Annick,

I would be thrilled to see just one of these birds of prey and you found a trio! The poses are wonderful atop the trees - especially the one trying out his wings. Excellent colors, clarity and composition. I wish you a very Merry Christmas.

Hallo Annick,
(Zwarte Wouw)
Een prachtige foto in alle opzichten. Toppertje!!!
Nog een goede en gezellige Tweede Kerstdag,

Hello Annick
Great capture of the African subspecies of the Black Kite, the Yellow-billed. You took these three in a fine composition on the thorn tree with fine poses, including the one stretching its wings.
Nice sharpness and light management too.
