Lesser known backyard food chains:

This is is the less known Brown crab spider (Aranea; Thomisidae; Xysticus audax; Braune Krabbenspinne), a 6 mm long female. It devours an Autographa gamma caterpillar (Lepidoptera; Noctuidae) which had tasted some Red clover just before. Since spiders are in turn picked up by birds and certain Hymenopterans it comes to no surprise that the spider exhibits discrete colors.
ID: I used H. Bellmann, 2006. Kosmos Atlas der Spinnentiere Europas. Franckh-Kosmos Verlag Stuttgart, Germany for ID. The brown triangle on the Cephalothorax does not reach the abdomen in this species.

Hello Dietrich!

I like very much your photos from backyard. Today real drama in microworld. I'm surprised that this caterpillar isn't toxic. Anyway great details, moment and composition.

Happy New Year Dietrich!
A fine image to remind us about one of the basics of nature, the food chain. An excellent macro of both the Brown Crab Spider and its prey, a half-grown A. gamma caterpillar. The technical qualities are superb and the POV and composition faultless.
Thank you and best wishes,
Ivan

Hi Dietrich.
Happy New year and all the best in 2009.
Simply wonderful scene. Plant, spider, its prey and water drop create an amazing composition. DOF is fantastic. All scene is in focus. Lights and colours are great as usual. Bravo and kind regards.

Lieber Dieter,
As guets niws Jahr
Herzliche Grüsse
Anne

Hi Dietrich,
