Hello my Friends!
March is very bussy month for me and I really have no time to visit TN too often... :< Anyway, today is a good day, finally I found an hour to present you something from my archieve :>

This is a male of Lucanus cervus cervus (Coleoptera: Lucanidae), one of the biggest stag beetle species of Europe.

I decided to show you this photo after some e-mail exchange with Steve (LordPotty) who presented some weekes ago an interesting stag beetle from New Zeland.
Dear Steve, this picture is dedicated to you! :>

And here are some basic facts about the hero from the photo:

Distribution: great part of Europe

Habitat: areas with old oak trees and dead trunks, in forests as well as in groves, where the larvae live.

Subspecies diversity: 4 subspecies
- Lucanus cervus cervus - West, Central, East Europe
- Lucanus cervus akbesianus - Syria, Turkey
- Lucanus cervus judaicus - Syria, Turkey
- Lucanus cervus turcicus - Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey

Food: larvae are xylophagous -feed on rotting wood, adults prefer tree.

Size: males: 35 - 92 mm, females: 35 - 45 mm.

Activity: adults from May to August, usually during early evening.

Protection status: as the result of forest menagement it is listed as a globally threatened/declining species and included in many international and national Red Lists among all Europe. In many European countries it is strictly protected by the law.

Mating behaviour: males, which are generally bigger than females, possess huge mandibles, which are used to duel with other males (like deers do) during fight about female. This combat resembles competition between knights in the Middle Ages :>

As always, thank you in advance for your time and visit!!! :>

Hello Radomir,
A nice one from your archives!
You caught this male Stag Beetle from a fine POV with great sharpness and lighting in a pleasing composition on the lichens.
This species is quite rare in Sweden and i have only seen it once before I had a digital camera.
Thanks for sharing this, have a nice weekend and don't work too hard.
