Rosy Starling is a rose pink myna like bird with glistening black head. Young birds and adults in winter plumage are duller and browner. They are seen in small flocks or up to 500 or more .

Rosy starlings are winter visitors to India. Their presence diminish markedly towards South India. They start arriving in july August and departs by mid April.

Rosy starlings are seen around cultivation, Banyan and peepul figs, Lantana, peeloo and other berries. They also sip the nectar from flowers of Salmalia.

Rosy Starlings breed in Eastern Europe, Western and Central Asia in stony hill sides and among ruins in May - June.

This particular bird was photographed in a place where people dump biodegradable waste from the nearby market. I was so surprised to see this species there, since Rosy starling is not regular winter visitor to our part of India.

The picture was taken with Nikon D3/ 600mm F4 + 1.4TC at 800 ISO.

Thanks for dropping in.

Hallo Smitha
Beautiful bird captured from a side view. The different shades of colour in the feathers are displayed beautifully, and the white lining alongside the edges is very striking. I get the impression that this seems to be a very proud bird. I love the two coloured beak and the prominent pose. The neutral background emphasize the detail of the lovely plumage. Thanks for sharing.
Best regards.

hello Smitha,
Very subtle bird-shot. At first glance it is not an eye-catcher, but looking closer it's a beautiful and elegant bird. I like especially the darker wings on the brown plumage. Excellent pose showing well the plumage and the head. Good decentred composition too.
Thanks for picture and interesting note

Hello Smitha,
I have seen flocks of Rosy Starlings in Goa, but never got as close as this to take such a fine shot and digital cameras were still in their infancy then.
This image of one in winter plumage has everything a top class bird photo should have: good POV, sharpness, lighting, OOF natural BG and set in a fine composition.
Nice to view and thanks for sharing it!
My best wishes to you, Anil and your family,

Ciao Smitha, beautiful bird in nice pose against lovely blurry BG, splendid sharpness and fine details, very well done, ciao Silvio

Crystal clear image Smitha and well capture on that beautiful soft background. Keep on snapping!

Hi Smitha

Too little time and too much to do before the holidays so just a quickie for now.

I cannot remember seeing a Rosy Starling before so, thanks for the introduction.
This is a great capture with lovely sharp details and pretty colours. The composition
is super with ample space for the bird to look into and that branch delivering the
subject to the image. It's about time that we see another posting from you again.

Well done MF and TFS.
