I took those 4 photos last year at the beginning of September. All four galls were place on the one rose shrub.

Diplopepis rosae - Mossyrose Gall Wasp

Gall wasps (Cynipidae), also called Gallflies, are a family of the order Hymenoptera and are classified with the Apocrita suborder of wasps in the superfamily Cynipoidea. About 1300 species of this generally very small creature (1-8 millimeters) are known worldwide, with about 360 species of 36 different genera in Europe and some 800 species in North America.

Galls or plant galls are abnormal outgrowths of plant tissues and can be caused by various parasites, from fungi and bacteria, to insects and mites.

Insect galls are caused by gall-inducing insects. They are usually induced by chemicals injected by the larvae or the adults into the plants, and possibly mechanical damage. After the galls are formed, the larvae develop inside until fully grown, when they leave
