Lesser known backyard visitors:

The 11 mm long Thick-headed fly looks like a wasp (Diptera; Conopidae; Conops flavipes; Wespen-Dickkopffliege). But the curved abdomen, the two instead of four wings and the form of the antennae give the dipterans and the conopids away. The fly sits on a Valerian (Valeriana officinalis; Grosser Baldrian) growing in my unkempt yard.

ID: I found a good key for conopids, thanks Mark! (http://home.hccnet.nl/mp.van.veen/conopidae/conops.html)

Hallo Dieter,

Hello Dietrich!

Beautifull macro of less known fly. Whole insect is sharp and detailed, taken from good POV and well composed with white flowers. Yellow and black colours look nice.

Hola Dietrich.
Great Macro. fine details and what I like most is that the Fly Valerian in very sharp all the way from head to tail.
TFS My friend.

hi Dietrich

Looking deadly but a superb macro shot of the insect with good light control to show sharpness and good composition. Nice work.

Hi Dietrich.
Nice close-up of a cute hoverfly. As usual DOF is great and whole insect is in focus. I also like delicate lighting and perfect exposure of the white flowers as well as impressive POV and diagonal composition of the shot. My best wishes and TFS.
