Rarer backyard visitors:

This strange looking, 10 mm Striped thick-headed fly (Diptera; Conopidae; Conops strigatus Wiedenmann; Streifen- Dickkopffliege) sits on Mentha and seems to salute before flying off. I've only seen it once last season.

ID: as I mentioned before, there is a key for conopids in Northern Europe out there in e-space (http://home.hccnet.nl/mp.van.veen/conopidae). I hope I hit the ID right.

Hello Dietrich!

I'm not big fan of pictures taken with flash, but this one is an exception. It simply looks great. Colours are natural and details are razor sharp. Black BG looks perfect. Fly is perfectly frozen in time in very funny 'so long!' pose. Link in your note is very helpfull. Great post as always!

Hallo Dietrich
excellent macro shot against black BG. splendid sharpness and colors. details and using light excellent. congratulations.
thanks for sharing, good evening

Hallo Dietrich,

Hello Dietrich
Excellent details. Well done.

Hi Dietrich
Excellent macro work of this strange fly - and good timing to capture the 'salute'. Perhaps it is testing the breeze? ;p
The flash is well controlled and the DOF on the insect and flower bring out the detail and sharp focus to perfection.
Kind Regards

Lieber Dieter,
