Hi Nick,

Whether or not you feel something is lacking this is a beautiful shot of the Goldfinch. You always capture birds in such wonderful positions. The colors are brilliant, the details of the face, eye and feathers are wonderful. Perhaps the head is a bit dark and that is what's bothering you? The background and composition are top notch.

This is a prime capture of Mr Goldfinch without a doubt.
In answer to your question of where it is lacking I will do my best to share my thoughts.
The pose is great and your equipment has managed well the reds on the crown, a little more light and the reds could have blown, that said the yellows have blown and look overexposed, this could be a result of over sharpening as this can give a false contrast over the huge tonal range of colours the Goldfinch has.
I personally think the colours of this wonderful bird would be best captured by canon equipment in the very early morning or late evening when the sun casts an even glow.
It is a great capture Nick and I hope you take my words as encouragement as I class you as one step from being a pro.

Hi Nick,
this is a fine picture; well composed with a good POV.
It's also sharp with lots of details and the colours are nice.
Only one thing: On my calibrated monitor it's a bit dark, maybe it could be 1/2 to 2/3 step brighter but that's all depend how you monitor is. Otherwise it's a good picture.

This fine shot of a Goldfinch strives towards perfection and it is nearly so in every respect, the POV, sharpness, BG, pose and composition of this close portrait.
If the lighting were a bit more favourable to increase the exposure on the shaded side of the bird on the left, especially the face, it would have been perfect.

Hello Nick,

Goldfinches are becoming some of the most frequent visitors to our garden since we have been supplying niger seeds. Sadly, they are too far away to capture on camera but I am working on creating a hide so that I can get closer.

This is a superbly detailed shot showing very clearly the lovely colours and patterns of the plummage. Great dof with the bird standing proudly against an oof b/g.
