Melitaea trivia, ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)
Lesser Spotted Fritillary

Turkish Name : Güzel İparhan Kelebeği.

Distribution in Turkey: Turkey is anywhere.

Distribution in the world: Melitaea trivia is a southern species that has spread from northern Portugal to Italy, the Balkans, Southern Russia and Turkey to the Himalayas. The distribution northern boundary extends from the southern edge of the Alps around Turin to Lower Austria. In Russia, it goes further north to the area around Moscow, and from there across the southern Urals to the Altai. In Western and Central Europe, it occurs only very locally and missing long stretches entirely. From the southern Balkans to the east it is much more widespread and frequent.

Living Area: Above sea level, can be seen at altitudes of 3,000-3,500 meters. Semi-deserts, open landscapes, xerothermic biotopes with thin vegetation, in the mountains.

Flight time: Two generation. Late-April to Early-October, depending on altitude.

Food Plants of the caterpillar: The caterpillar lives on tomentose hairy mullein species ( Verbascum spp), under the protection of young gnawed hair fluff. The caterpillars descendants of the last generation overwinter after the 2nd Molting on the floor under the food plant. (Author: Jürgen Hensle)

Description-Notes: The underside marginal spots tend to be triangular. Also the upperside hindwing has quite a complete band going across the wing. Sexes are similar, though females are larger and paler orange on avarage. Hindwing almost always has median row of black spots (which maybe missing on similar fritillaries) and submarginal spots are crescent-shaped on both wings, not rectangular, not rounded. Some of the black marginal spots on hindwing tend to be triangula, not rounded, and orange spots in postmedian band are bordered on outside by well-defined black crescents.

Wingspan: 30-42 mm long.

• Spotted Fritillary - Melitaea Didyma, (Esper, 1779)
