[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Fox River is one of several rivers which flow through deep limestone gorges in the Paparoa National Park of the South Islands West Coast.
A few weeks ago I took my son on a kayaking expedition up to the Ballroom,a massive limestone overhang that has long been used as a camping spot by vistors.
Parts of the gorge near here are filled with giant limestone slabs and boulders, the remnants of a once massive cave passage.
There are still hundreds of caves around here, both explored and undiscovered....this is some seriously dense rainforest here.
The highest recorded annual rainfall on the coast is 18.4 metres,so,as you can imagine, floods are frequent and often unpredictable.
The gelogy here is fascinating too.
The streambed is full of coloured limestones and quartzes, with the occassional lump of coal, and fkales of silvery mica make all the sand and rocks sparkle like glitter.
The water is usually fresh and clear (except in flood) but can sometimes have a brownish tint from natural tannins.

I hope you like this glimpse of another of my favourite spots here on the coast.

Thanks for looking.
Steve

Hello Steve,
A superb view of what looks like a spectacular limestone landscape. I like the POV taken from the river bed to provide fine perspective and great composition.
The endemic wildlife here must be amazing and I thank you for sharing a glimpse into some of that.
Cheers,
Ivan

Hi Steve,

I can see why this is one of your favorite spots! A magnificent scene with the trees on both sides of the water, the wonderful sky and clouds and the mountains in the distance. What makes it so rare to me are the stones in the river. A beautiful composition.
