Baccha elongata
Family: Syrphidae

This small hoverfly (Syrphidae) is easily identified by its thin body and bulbous end. It favours woodland rides and hedgerows, seeking out sunny patches. The larva is a predator of aphids. It can be found from April to September.

I took some shots (with circular flash) of this tiny hoverfly which flew up around grasses. The focus was not so difficult to make. And it is only after downloading the photo on my computer that I noticed small insects on the grass (maybe babies locusts?) .

Hi Catherine.
Terrific in-flight picture. I also like to use macro ring flash. It is great for such purposes and slows to freeze small insect in flight. Pictured subject is amazing. Grass and cute hoverfly create a wonderful composition. Flash light is very nice and delicate. Sharpens and details of the grass and insect are superb. Bravo.
P.S. I am very pleased with your decision to mark me as a favorite TN member. It is great honor for me. Thanks a lot.

Hi Catherine,

I'm always amazed when I see a wonderful macro of a hoverfly in motion. You captured this perfectly with marvelous colors and razorsharp details. The setting, background and composition are all excellent.

It is really great how you captured this one in its flight! I like the story about making the picture. I also overlooked the baby locust in first place. It is thus not true that the discovery process is finished when the photographer has taken the photo and went home. The camouflage of some animals, it seems, makes it possible for the nature photographer to discover some surprises in the postprocessing stage :)
