Linnet (Carduelis cannabina)
Swedish name: Hämpling

We took a trip south along the coast of Scania and stopped at a car park just north of the fishing harbour town of Simrishamn. As this car park is popular, especially with dog owners because of the adjacent beach is open to dogs, the birds are used to people and dogs.

In our part of Scania it is very difficult to get closer than about 20 meters (65 ft) to a Linnet , but here where several pair nest in the Rosa rugosa bushes, we were able to get much closer.

The Linnet is a widespread and fairly common bird in most of Europe, though it is only found in S. Scandinavia and only during the summer. It overwinters further south in Europe.

This is a male that has a red patch on the top of the head and a rosy red ‘waistcoat’. The female is generally brownish and lacks red. At first sight the linnet looks like a redpoll but the redpoll has streaky plumage. The linnet lacks any streaks.

This was taken with my camera hand-held at a distance of about 10 meters. After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was sharpened. The rose foliage was sufficiently far from the linnet to provide a totally blurred BG.
What I first thought to be a leaf that got in the way of the lens and cause the greenish tinge on the belly of this bird proved to be a reflection of the greenery. Other shots that I took of a linnet at another place in these bushes showed the same type of reflection.

Hi Ivan. This is a bird i have yet to see so thanks for posting this fine picture. I often fine you can get closer to birds in forest car parks. A like the pose on the thin stick. You have taken this with your usual sharp fosusing and fine detail. The colours stand out so well. With the red on its head and chest. Well done TFS.

Hi Ivan,

A beautiful shot of this Linnet who strongly resembles the House Finch. Our House Finches are very photographer friendly and allow us to get pretty close to them. I love the pose, perch, and the colors and details of the face, eye, and feathers. A beautiful background and simple composition.

Hi Ivan.
Terrific shot of the species which is widespread in our region. I like this species and its songs. I also have many pictures of it but from far distance. They are not for TN. Your picture is blameless. All is the best. Bravo.

Hello Ivan,
Perfect photo, good light and BG, the bird is exactly in focus. I've also posted photo this species but light was poor and Linnet was too high among leaves.
Best regards, Pawel
P.S. I like to read your notes which are interesting written.

Hello Ivan
Another first class shot from you, this male Linnet is wonderful in perfect pose
very sharp details and beautiful colors, superb green neutral BG
very well done
Jacqueline

A beautiful subject that you've done full justice to...
Very well presented shot, Ivan, from any perspective!

Hi Ivan,
A fine capture of this Linnet at 10m.
I've just got myself a new Canon SX10 IS and I'm finding it very difficult to shoot those little fungi in low light conditions.
Its certainly much more difficult to use than the Lumix.
One thing it is better at though is zoom shots.
Its going to be great for shooting birds ... I just need to try and find some now.
Cheers
Steve
