Another picture from my "Dagonfly-day" at the lakes - but a butterfly this time. It was at the lake of Jaegerthal. I had stopped the car, and I had barely walked some steps when I saw this beautiful little thing on a flower, not far away. Only when I was finished with this one did I turn to the Dragon- and Damselflies.

It is (I suppose) a butterfly belonging to the species Lycaena phlaeas , a Small Copper in English. They are quite common on hot and sunny days, in our Alsacian meadows.

This butterfly is widespread and common across Europe, Asia and North America, and it can also be found in North Africa. It is found in a wide variety range of habitats from chalk downlands, heathland, woodland clearings to churchyards and waste ground in cities.

In bright sun it is a very active little butterfly with the males setting up small territories which they will defend vigorously against rival males or indeed any unlucky passing insect. Even the shadow of a large bird passing overhead is enough to get him going. Females are pursued mercilessly and mating usually occurs low down in vegetation.

The eggs are laid singly on the underside of foodplant leaves and the young caterpillar feeds on the underside of the leaf creating "windows" by leaving the upper epidermis of the leaf untouched. Pupation takes place in the leaf litter and the pupa is thought to be tended by ants. There are between two and three broods a year, fewer further north. In exceptionally good years, a fourth brood sometimes occurs in the south and adults can still be seen flying into November. The species overwinters as a caterpillar.

Hello Valérie,
A fine capture of this common little butterfly.
This is taken from a fine POV to show the half-open wings with excellent sharpness so that both surfaces of the wings are well shown. Nicely composed on the Ox-eye daisy flower against a fine OOF natural BG.
Thanks and best regards,
Ivan

This is a professional job, Valerie.
The Small Copper perched daintily on that lovely Daisy has a three-dimensional look to it. Both sides of its wings look glorious with those fine details and colours on them.
The bokeh BG complements the subject admirably well.
Well done and thanks for sharing this delightful picture.

Hello Valerie
greats the vivid colors of the composition. The Lycaena is perfectly in focusing with little daisy on a soft colors background giving depth of the photo. Optimal contrast and clear details with an excellent game of lights and shadows.

Valerie, bonsoir.
