Broad-bordered Bee Haw-moth (Hemaris fuciformis)
Swedish name: Humlelik Dagsvärmare, meaning ‘bumblebee-like day-flying hawk-moth’.

The cold and windy weather this month is beginning to warm up and as we had sunshine and relative warmth yesterday afternoon we took a short trip to one of our butterfly spots consisting of an open area in the pine forest.

Though not plentiful there were the usual species, all of which we had photographed before but we are always keen to get even better pictures.

While I was trying to follow a Blue Emperor Dragonfly that had unexpectedly turned up several km. from the nearest water, Ulla shouted excitedly to come to her.

She had discovered this Hawk-moth that she first took to be a bumblebee, but its rapid hovering behaviour round the flowers of Echium vulgaris soon drew her attention and made her call me.

I took several shots and was able to see the rolling out and in of the long proboscis between visiting flowers (SEE WORKSHOP).

It occurs in S. Sweden where it is not common but can be seen in flowery meadows during the second half of May and first half of June. This year flying times are rather late because of the cold weather.

It is widespread in Europe including S. Britain. It the south it occurs as two generations and the larval host plants include various species of Lonicera.

This was taken at a distance of about 2 meters (6 ft 6 in) with the camera hand held. After moderate cropping and size reduction the images were slightly sharpened.

The unopened thumbnail shows it at about natural size.

Though I am not in the habit of dedicating images to people, I dedicate this to my wife Ulla, my constant companion in the field as well at home, without whom I would not have taken these shots.

Hello and Good Morning Ivan,
Great macro capture of a hawk-moth and superb dedication your lady:)
TFS and regards,
Deniz

Hello Ivan, what a splendid in-flight shot of a hawk-moth. Superb shot and superb dedication to a superb lady of this site.
TFS and regards,
Bahadır

Ulla certainly deserves credit for this picture, Ivan. If she had not drawn your attention to it, we would never have been able to see such a wonderful picture of a Hawk Moth.
You have judiciously made the exception to dedicate this picture to her :).
I too have tried my hand at this restless devil in the past, but with marginal success. You, on the other hand, have captured perhaps the clearest and the sharpest shot of it ever seen on TN.
The entire Moth with its proboscis well into the flower is frozen in action with lovely details and colours on it. The flowers add a great deal to the overall beauty of this composition.
Well done and TFS.

Hi Ivan.
This subject is in my wish list for years. Wehave similar plants and flowers, we have almost similar moths, but I have not your skill and luck to take nice picture of such scene (I have many bad shots only). Superb in-flight picture with great sharpness, rich colours and amazing composition. Bravo.
Alexei.

Hello Ivan
the focusing on the Hemaris is perfect. Excellent the composition of colors that give a great contrast between the little insect and the flower with fine details and optimal game of light.
Livio

Hello Ivan,
The beautiful shot of Moth with its proboscis & flower has come out very well. Your compositions are out of the world. TFS

Hi Ivan,

A very nice shot, a fine, attractive composition, shows the insect well, and caught it while nectaring. These aren't the easiest insect to photograph, I know from experience. There are at least 2 species that visit flowers in my yard a little later in the summer, and I've made a couple attempts to capture them in photos, with mixed results.

Hello Ivan
a great view of the Broad-bordered Bee Haw-moth, excellent POV and DOF, outstanding sharpness and brilliant colours in a fantastic composition.
TFS
Best regards
Maurizio

Hi Ivan,

Splendid photo, with accurate timing to capture the motion of insect wings and achieve a defined and clear. Excellent balance of light upon the whole, allow smooth and accurate colors. Very good job, also has a composition very appropriate.

Regards & TFS!

Jesús

1/2000th it took eh? I wonder how fast those wings go? Even at high speed ..1/500th was my rule as was that of many back in the day...but in this day and age we sometimes need 1/10,000....I don't think many cameras go that high..Catch a bullet in mid air...

But none the less this is a superior mid air capture. Nice use of the sun as well..and being the resident naming expert...we have a winner!
Bob

Hi Ivan
Both shots are great Maybe I like the ws version a little bit more ;-) Nice POV, great moment, perfect blured background. And of course very interesting species and great dedication to Ulla
Best wishes

Hi Ivan,

It's so nice to see you dedicate this wonderful picture to Ulla. She earned it :-) I hope you both know how lucky you are to have each other. I have never seen a Hawk-moth but feel that I have after seeing these two shots. Excellent colors and details of this insect showing off the long tongue. (I love it half-coiled). A lovely setting, background and composition.

Jane

Hi Ivan,
this is a magnificent shot with a great skill. The frozen movement allows us to witness a superbs action of this habit of the moth. That long proboscis in its natural action is really a fascinating capture.
Congratulations for such an excellent shot, and not forgetting that the dedication is very perfect indeed.
My hat to both of you, the sharing is enormous.

regards,
Foozi

hello Ivan

beautiful dedication to Ulla, both photos are excellent
but my preference (ma préférence) go to the one on the WS,
i love the POV of that photo and the blur of the wings
that is showing the motion of the insect's flight, TFS
