Impala / Aepyceros melampus

Today's posting of this young Impala is one of my many attempts to get a decent shot of any young male antelope with its horns just starting to show. Such a young male is called a "Penkop" (in Afrikaans) or directly translated it would be a "pen-head" or "pin-head". I know that this feature have been posted on the gallery a number of times. To me this one is rather special, due to the petite size of the horns. They are so short and tiny at this stage, but soon it will develop into a prime pair of Impala horns.

I personally think this is a beautiful antelope, but many times people tend to pass it by when in a reserve or park, because of their large quantities, and because of this fact it is easy to miss out on these young males and the beautiful horns in the early stages of development.

General Overview
This beautiful, bronzed prancer of the wild has the grace of a ballet dancer and the fleet-footed thrust of a high-jump champion. Its elegant, bounding leaps clearing heights of 3 meters and distances of as much as 12 metres at a time.

Alert and extremely elusive, this gentle, fox-coloured antelope will let out a quick, high-pitched snort when alarmed, taking off with its astonishing leaps over long grass, bushes and small trees.

When it is moving more slowly, you will recognise it easily by its slightly hunched back and its habit of pressing its tail tightly against its hindquarters. The ears flick busily while it is browsing, and there is frequent, impatient foot stamping.

Impala are very gregarious, often forming herds of several hundred, especially in winter. During the mating season from January to May intense rivalry builds up between males and with loud snorts and grunts, they will resort to threatening displays, horn-thrusting and, occasionally, fatal duels with each other.

Single young, usually born in early summer, are able to join their mothers in the herd within two days of birth, a fact which favours their chances of eluding predators such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs and hyaenas.

They are known as the "McDonalds" of the bush, because they are "fast food" and are a very popular dinner choice for predators such as lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena.

I hope you enjoy looking at this photo as much as I took pleasure in taking it.

Hello Anna,
A superbly sharp capture of a young 'Penkop' male Impala. The sharpness is almost good enough to ID the flies on it!
The POV is ideal for a portrait and the closeness makes the busy natural BG just right.
A great capture and thanks for sharing it!

Hi Anna!

Congratulations for your patience, it was worth the picture. Indeed, it's very interesting to see this Impala at the stage where the horns are at the beginning of their development. The picture is crystal clear and shows so fine details. The quite close focus in the style of a portrait highlights the beauty of the animal and its cute aspect very well. Moreover, your notes are very instructive and pleasant to read.

Kind regards

Buen trabajo a mi entender.

hej anna!
A very beautifil animal you showing
here with real good sharpness and
fine composition!
good work!

Hello Anna,
This is very beautiful close up of the animal with an excellent eye contact. You have taken out the finer details of the young impala antelope face including hairy pinnae & four houseflies on its forehead. I appreciate "Mc Donalds" of the bush in your notes. Thanks for sharing.

What a really nice portrait photo of an Impala. There are so many of them in Kruger that we tend to just bypass them in search of more interesting wildlife. Next time I will pause a while longer when I see impala again, and perhaps get a photo nearly as good as yours.

Hi Anna.
Once more you have presented your outstanding shot of a beautiful creature. It looks like sculpture created by Master with great taste and precise hands. Fantastic sharpness and details of the animal, wonderful reproduction of the pictorial surroundings. I also like fine framing of the scene and composition of the image. Thanks for pleasure from superb post.

Hello Anna,

A very beautiful capture!
Fine details and nice colors.

Hello Anna.

Thank you for that lovely picture from an Impala.

The composition of the picture is very nice. I particularly appreciate the vertical composition. It reflect very well the comportment of the animal, surprised by the photographer, full of interrogations and ready to escape.

The sharpness is very good all along the picture. The depth of field is excellent, giving us many details. The colors and the contrast are realistic.

Fascinating picture of the wild life, full of movement. Useful comments.

Hope to see another time on treknature.

All the best.

Sorry I've missed a few shots of yours, Anna..
This is an excellent portrait...The colours lovely and warm, the light perfect, too!

Hi Anna,
I agree that Impalas are very beautiful. He has amazing large brown eyes...good for watching out for the enemy and those ears, they are adorably furry. I'm sure he could hear something sneaking up from quite a distance. You've captured this pretty boy so well, an excellent portrait.

Hello Anna,
Obviously I missed this very cute creature... Impalas are so fine and fragile looking animals. I love to look at them in documetaries. Amazing picture which allows us to look straight in its eyes, like we would be just face to face to it.
Excellent sharpness and beautiful natural colors.
Thanks also for your kind words on my last picture. I'm very touched.
Kind regards

Hi Anna,

Excellent portrait, beautifull colors and sharpness.
Amazing composition with great details.
good shot.
Best regards.

It is an excellent portrait of a young Impala Male! It shows the wide-eyed curiosity of the Impala at that age. By filling the frame with head and neck, you were able to draw attention to the graceful neck! (I actually feel, that Impalas are the most graceful antelopes in South Africa!) The sheen of its coat adds to the attraction: a fine portrait of a Penkoppie.
Kind Regards
