Orthetrum coerulescens
Family: Libellulidae

The Keeled Skimmer is a species of European dragonfly. Females and immature males lack the black abdominal pattern. The pterostigma is orange and the thorax usually bears pale stripes. Its eyes are blue-grey. It breeds mainly in peat bogs and flies (in the UK) from June to September.
This dragonfly is quite rare, but locally common. Its typical habitat is acidic heath land, where it is often seen alongside Golden-Ringed Dragonflies. Its flight is quite skittish, with frequent hovering, and it lands often. It can fly quite a distance from water, despite its seemingly weak flight. When it perches, the wings are held forward. Key identification features
- mature male has a pale blue abdomen which lacks a black tip.
- females are pale brown with yellow tinted wings
- thorax in both sexes with broad creamy antehumeral stripes
- pterostigma are long and yellow (From Dragonflyireland)
- a few divided cells on the wings below the pterostigma (max 3-4). If more, it is a O. brunneum.

Hi Catherine. This is a first class close up of the pair together. You have captured the Keeled Skimmer with sharp focusing and fine detail. Your use of the light shows the wings of so well with a sine. A good POV/DOF. All with interesting notes . Well done TFS.

excellent close-up of the two pretty dragonflies in "action"! :-) that is the nice thing about 400mm - you do not need
to get too near to them so that they are not disturbed. sharpness and details are fantastic as well as the pose(s).

elle est superbe cette photo, la profondeur de champs est parfaite ( malgré l'ouverture de 6.3 ....) j'imagine qu'il y a un p'tit coup de flash la dessous non ?

A very nice capture of these beautiful dragonflies forming a wheel. Excellent focus on both and sharp details. I love their colours too that stand out against the light background. I wish we had this species in Sweden!

Très belle photographie de Orthetrum coerulescens. Très belle netteté de l'ensemble, qui fait de cette photographie, en plus de ses qualités artistiques, une vraie leçon de sciences naturelles. Belle composition du cliché, avec, en outre un très bel arrière plan aux couleurs et tonalités chaudes:cela nous permet de percevoir la température de la journée.
