[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Gatekeeper, Pyronia tithonus

Male Gatekeepers emerge in July a little before the females, and I have seen only males so far this year just over the last 2 or 3 days. The male is distinguished on the upperside by the dark scales, which form a 'sex brand' in the central part of the forewing. These specialised scales can be clearly seen in this image.

It was cooler here today, with only short sunny periods, and the butterflies were a bit less active. So this guy sat for me a little longer than normal. I was able to use some flash to shorten the exposure and use f/11 for depth of field. The picture was hand-held with the Sigma 180mm prime mcro lens.

The picture was almost this big uncropped, but has been greatly resized and a little sharpened for TN. I will post the underside tomorrow.

Hi Alan. This is a first class close up of the Gatekeeper Butterfly. From the top POV we can see the wing markings on the male. You have taken this one with sharp focusing and fine detal. All with verynatural looking colours. well done TFs.

Hi Alan,

My dear neighbor today!

First of all, thank you for the advice and done with Neat Image WS!

I am very grateful for the support you!

As always, your photo is a good shower of optical settings, which achieve an even and balanced outcome in focus, color and light. The details of shape and texture of the wings of the butterfly, are supreme.

Good work, thanks for sharing. I hope you have a good week!

Hello Alan,

It is pleasing to see butterflies in England.
We had hardly any last year and those that we saw only began appearing in August.
This is an excellent capture, the butterfly's outstretched wings revealing sharply focussed details of the distinctive patterns and colours.
Good dof.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)
