Black-tailed Godwit (Limosa limosa).
Swedish name: Rödspov, meaning ‘Red curlew’

This Black-tailed Godwit male was taken from the car just north of the southern tip of the island of Öland. During the spring and autumn this part of Öland is famous for its birds and is visited by birdwatchers from all over Sweden and other parts of Europe.

The female is not as brightly coloured and tends to keep hidden when she is not feeding and she does most of the brooding. In this instance she was feeding together with this male.

The Black-tailed Godwit nests in suitable marsh areas across N. and C. Europe, Asia and Australia and spends the winter in milder coastal areas. During recent years it has declined in numbers in even Swedish nature reserves and nobody knows why, though perhaps it has something to do with their overwintering areas along the coasts of Africa.

This was taken at a distance of about 10 meters (33 ft.). After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was sharpened.

Hi Ivan

This is an excellent natural picture of the godwit. I think the different colors and patterning on the body is clearly visible. It is always nice to see images of/read notes on species that are endangered or on the decline - it gives us a perspective of conservation threats from across the world.

Thanks for sharing

Good morning Ivan
I would say one irreproachable capture, pose,POV,composition, colours, clarity, all in very high level of output, perfect moment
TFS and thanks for sharing

Hello Ivan!
Magnificent bird portrait.

Hi Ivan

Nice shot of this godwit. We get this species here south of Sydney (rare), however our guys come from the Siberian race.
Its not easy taking birds in grass and getting a good result, but you've done very well here. Great sharpness and composition as usual.
Have a great weekend

Hello Ivan,
What a fantastic photo! The sharpness and details are really perfect, specially on the head and beak. The patterns in the feathers are great. Excellent POV, timing, composition, DOF and OOF BG.

Hello Ivan
Good use of your car as a 'hide' to capture this shot. Well exposed and good DOF to allow the bird to stand out. Interesting notes too, TFS.
Kind Regards

Hi Ivan,

I love the pose of this Godwit - his beak looks almost as long as his legs. Beautiful colors and details of his face, eye, and wonderful feathers. The grassy setting is perfect.

hello Ivan

this photo for me is one of your 10 best photos of your galery,
a GREAT close up photo of the Black-tailed Godwit,
with very fine POV and the way (with its pose) is framed
on the image, fine focus great sharpness and details,
a wonderful luminosity, i love the way the background
is blurred and to see details, the catch-light render
the photo more beautiful, du plus profond de mon coeur Ivan
i wish you one day to do a photo of Scolopax Rusticola
with the same image quality like this photo

une de tes plus belles photos d'oiseaux,
un vrai régale pour les yeux, TFS

Hello Ivan,
The beautiful bird which I can see only in early spring just after melting snow. Although you take photo from the car it's very good.
Regards, Pawel

Hello Ivan !
Wow, such a great picture ! Everything is just perfect - the sharp details, the natural colors, the wonderful pose of the bird, the composition, the POV. The bird in itself is beautiful, too, with his long beak, his long legs and his elegant silhouette. It's a pity that he is endangered, but the picture is great. Very well done !

Hi Ivan, another time i'm surprising from the impressive sharpness of your pic. There is a magic light inside, and fantastics colors too! My best compliments, have a nice weekend,Luciano

Quality image. It has a genuine "feel" to it..I can sense my seeing it...and almost walking up to fed it from hand..but that is true optical illusion. Well done sir!

Hej Ivan
Nice presentation of this beautiful bird from Öland. Taking pictures from a car on south part of the island is my favorite :) I am in Cusco in Peru right now and tomorrow morning I am on my way to Manu wildlife area in Amazon's. I have 5 days to explore and photograph...

Ha en trevlig sommar och hälsa Ulla.

How sad that this species is declining, Ivan...
A lovely shot, the colours and details are lovely, the POV perfect!

Hello Ivan ,
Very sharp and well composed image , colors very natural .
TFS and good luck .

Hola Ivan,
gracias por tu ayuda, como ya es habitual, en la id de mi insecto.
Tu toma excelente, con un buen control de la luz, lo que se aprecia en lo bien que te quedó ese didícil plumaje para la fotografía. Pose, etc. sobresalientes.

Saludos: J. Ignasi.
