After all the birds I try a butterfly. I hope you like it. This Peacock was sitting on top of a thistle flower.

The European Peacock butterfly (Inachis io), more commonly known simply as the Peacock butterfly, is a well-known colourful butterfly, found in temperate Europe and Asia. It is the only member of the genus Inachis which is sometimes included in Nymphalis. It should not be confused or classified with the "American peacocks" in the genus Anartia; these are not close relatives of the present species. The peacock butterfly is resident in much of its range, often wintering in buildings or trees. It therefore often appears quite early in spring.

Reproduction and food
The butterfly hibernates over winter before laying its eggs in early spring, in batches of up to 500 at a time. The caterpillars, which are shiny black with six rows of barbed spikes and a series of white dots on each segment, hatch after about a week and feed on nettles and hops.

The adult butterflies drink nectar from a wide variety of flowering plants, including buddleia, willows, dandelions, wild marjoram, danewort, hemp agrimony, and clover; they also utilize tree sap and rotten fruit.

The Peacock can be found in woods, fields, meadows, pastures, parks, and gardens, and from lowlands up to 8,200 feet (2,500 m) elevation. It is a relatively common butterfly seen in many European parks and gardens.

Very impressive and colorful image of this beautiful peacock with great background, the butterfly almost looks like flying in the air. tfs.

Hi, Peter
Lovely lighting and a great background - just needed a smaller aperture to capture the eyes, antennae and wingtips within the DOF. However, I can see that you were working with a low shutter speed and wide aperture so the light intensity cannot have been very bright.
Regards, Nigel.

Hi Peter,

A good effort for your first effort on butterflies. Focus is good but f8 may have helped, although the speed would have been slower. Colours are good and clear.

TFS regards Bill

really nice try, the peacock is beautiful, very good open-wings-pose showing us all the wonderful colors and
details, just the focus is a little bit soft especially on the head and edges of the wings. the shutter speed with 1/125 for
300mm could have been too slow and an aperture of f/5.6 is still too open, f/8-f/13 creates a better dof, but for that i
guess the iso200 would have had to be boosted to 400 or more, which on the other hand could have resulted in noise, or you
could have used a flash...so, keep on trying, you are on a good way. best wishes & take care, thor.

Hi Peter. Nature has made this European Peacock with such beautiful markings and bright colours. Which you have captured in this first class picture. Your POV/DOF. is spot on. The butterfly stands out so well against the plain grey BG. Well done TFs.

hallo Peter
een mooie compositie
lijkt alsof hij vliegt
erg mooi die kleuren
hij kon iets scherper, maar hij blijft mooi

Hi Peter, one of the most common and beautiful butterfly of our continent. The pic isn't a best shot, especially the sharpness is poor, maybe you are at the first attempt in this world..ehehe...your birds are surely better ;-) but this is a nice present for a butterfly fan like me...you must to make better! Have a nice day,Luciano

Hi Peter,

A beautiful Peacock in a magnificent diagonal composition. I love the open wings showing off the deep colors and wonderful markings. The background is absolutely perfect. Funny, when I first looked at this picture I thought the butterfly was in mid-flight.

NIce to see a butterfly from you, Peter!
Your presentation looks three dimensional, I feel I can touch it!

Hello Peter,
You caught this Peacock butterfly with so little under it that it almost looks like it is flying!
Though it is a little worn the details and colours are excellent and the composition perfect.
Just now our garden is being invaded by both Painted Ladies and Peacocks!
Thanks and best wishes,

Buen encuadre y preciosos colores, aunque algo justa de enfoque.
Saludos Peter: Josep Ignasi.

Hello Peter
a fine capture of this European Peacock in a excellent pose with wings wide open
against a beuatiful grey BG, great contrast
the whole butterfly is well detailed with wonderful colors
Have a good night

Hi Peter

Good pose of this attractive butterfly. Good diagonal composition. I think the DOF could have been a bit better as the antenae and mouth parts are not in focus. Sorry for the harsh critique :)

Hello Peter ,
Colors and composition in cadrage very beautiful , sharpness maybe better a little bit .
TFS and good luck .

Hello Peter
I am jealous, because I am undoubtedly the only one not to have met this splendid butterfly.
