GIANT HORNTAIL :

The last tergite of the abdomen has a strong, projecting spike. The ovipositor is longer and also projects posteriorly. Female giant horntails lay their eggs in trees. The larvae bore into the wood and live in the tree. They typically migrate to just under the bark before pupation.

THE PIC :

From left to right, between the 6 legs note :
1 - the ovipositor (inserted vertically in wood and laying eggs),
2 - its sheath,
3 - The projecting spike from the abdomen.
My new ring flash has been very helpful as it was dark with counterlight.

crop: 5% of the right.

Thanks for looking
Jean-Marie
