Laphria flava

There have been a lot of ladybirds here lately but on a walk in our woods yesterday I saw only one, and that had just been caught by a Robber fly! When I returned to this place a little later the Robber fly was still enjoying its meal. It is a stout and hairy beast with a moustache that protects the eyes from a struggling prey.

Laphria flava is a common species in coniferous forests where it lays its eggs in tree stumps and old wood and the larvae feed on decaying vegetable matter. Above is a female and you can see the ovipositor in the bottom picture.

Maybe Iíve cropped these captures too tightly but I wanted to show the details.

Hello Ulla!

Excellent capture. I've never seen robber fly eating lady bird! And this hairy specie is also new for me. Very good idea to show this scene from two different POVs. Very interesting and educative post.

A superb collage, Ulla.
I do feel badly about the lady bug, though!

Hi Ulla,
Great to see you again. I've missed your photos al notes. Maybe people perfer to see a ladybird alive and the robber fly dead. This is real nature and this is a great example of survival of the fitest. I like it that you did not pass by it, but actually took several photos. Both show a great moment and the bottom one had excellent detail.

Hello Ulla
this is a very great scene ! poor ladybug but it's nature,
each images are very sharp and greatly presented from a different POV
very well done and have a good night

An intriguing piece of a novel at my sight...the beast looking very well its part whilst the poor lady has past....Dracula has his way...and in broad daylight only to be captured by a camera....broke two major rules of vampires!
