Owl Butterfly (Caligo eurilochus)

Distribution: Central and South America.

The owl-butterflies are amongst the largest of all butterflies and can easily be mistaken for bats due to their crepuscular (active at dusk and dawn) flight habit. Eggs are laid in small batches and hatch after about 12 days. The various species of Musa (bananas) are the preferred larval foodplants. The larvae usually feed at night and during the daytime line up along the underside of the midrib. The pupa hangs head down wards from a silken pad and usually hatches after about 21 days. Adult butterflies can live for many months feeding mainly on rotting fruit.

Scary eye Pam ;-) Perfect looking patterns on its wings. Brown colours, sharpness, details - all very good. Pity that so great moths don't fly in Poland...
