Red Admiral - Vanessa atalanta

This is a well-known colourful butterfly, found in temperate Europe, Asia and North America. The species is resident only in warmer areas, but migrates north in spring, and sometimes again in autumn.

This large butterfly is identified by its striking dark brown, red and black wing pattern. The caterpillar feeds on nettles, and the adult drinks from flowering plants like the Buddleia and overripe fruit.

In northern Europe, it is one of the last butterflies to be seen before winter sets in, often feeding on the pale fire of ivy flowers on sunny days. The Red Admiral is also known to hibernate, re-emerging individuals showing prominently darker colourings than first brood subjects. The butterfly also flies on sunny winter days, especially in southern Europe.

Hello Ulla
Superb close up shot of this butterfly. Details and composition are perfect.
TFS and regards,

Hallo Ulla
Yes, this is one of the butterflies we often see, but I don't think one can easily get tired looking at its beauty. I really like the point of view in which yours of today is featured. The light falls just at the right spots to bring out the details of this beautiful butterfly to its best, especially the somewhat shimmer on the hairy body, and the blue markings on the wings. I also like the shadows captured on the leave. You have also photographed the eye and the tips of the antennas well and with great lucidity. This is a great image with super focus and sharpness. It has a friendly and appealing mood that surrounds it and I like it a lot.
It was a pleasure to stop by. Best regards.

Hi Ulla,

A stunning shot of this Rear Admiral. No colors are as striking as these and you have captured them perfectly. A lovely pose on the leaf showing off his pretty shape. Excellent clarity and composition. I've never seen one here - I guess warm areas means warm and not hot.

Hi Ulla,

Lovely macro of this beautiful specimen. I love you style of recording butterflies. Well done!

Have an enjoyable weekend,

Hi Ulla,
eye-catching capture of the Red Admiral, brightly lighted by the summer sun with fascinating contrast of colours on those bright green leaves.
This year seems to be a very good year for these butterflies. Have seen them in congregations of dozens of individuals at the edges of cliff forests at Rügen in the Baltic Sea a few days ago.
Thank you! With best regards,
