Better known backyard bugs:

There are many bugs around that deserve to be presented. This one is a larva of the frequently encountered Green stink bug (Heteroptera; Pentatomidae; Palomena viridissima; Grüne Stinkwanze). It has just stepped out of its former larval cuticle. You may notice the white tubes, inner cuticle of the tracheas.

Ecdysis is a phenomenon that has fascinated nature observers for centuries. The epidermal cell layer that secreted the old cuticle (in front) also secretes the different looking new one. The ecdysis into an adult form brings even more change, the whole sculpture of the cuticle changes and wings appear. Before each molt the epidermal cell layer therefore has to be reprogrammed. Before the old cuticle is shed the inner part is dissolved and absorbed, the new cuticle secreted.

ID: There are two species of green Palomena in my yard, the other one is called P. prasina (L.), the Green shield bug (see here). They differ little, but in P. viridissima the second antennal segment is almost twice as long as the third one, not of the same length. The sides of the pronotum are concave, not convex. I used E. Wachmann et al., 2008. Wanzen Bd. 4. Goecke& Evers, Keltern D.

Technical stuff: as usual I took the picture with a dual macro flash that is covered with paper (light disperser); 100 ISO, 1/125 sec. To get the perspective I used f/20. The price to pay for good DOF is reduced sharpness, which I tried to compensate with much sharpening in PS (20% 1.5 pixel wide; edge sharpening, 20% 1 pixel). The result was some grain in the background which I removed with blurring.

Wonderful macro, great details, lovely colors.

Hi Dietrich,
Brilliant macro shot. Large DOF are hard to obtain in macro and was here necessaray to present well the old exuvia and the fresh adult. You did perfectly.
I've seen many exuvia before but never noticed the tracheas. Impressive and interesting to look at it. I never realised before that trachea's had to be renewed too.
composition is excelent too.

Original y bello trabajo Dietrich. Gran profundidad que ese f20 te facilitó y sensibilidad del fotógrafo al hacernos ver de una manera tan sencilla y clara los detalles de esos pequeños insectos durante su muda. Buena explicación.

Hi Dietrich,

Beautiful 2-in-1 capture of the adorable insects with great details!
The sharpness and POV are perfect with nice color contrast, existing within the picture. The picture has superb focusing and the clarity is exceptionally well done.
Very well done composition!

best regards,
Paras

Hallo Dietrich
I wish I had more time............
However I cannot pass this by without saying. Wonderful and detailed close-up. All around a special image, with features greatly seen. Just love the dotted details on the insect on the foreground, as well as its glassy wings. Thanks for sharing.
Best regards
Anna

Hi Dietrich

You obviously have an amazing backyard with many insects living there rent free, so the occasional pose is a small price to pay. Great presentation of these two stages. great note.
Good composition, sharpness and details
Good DOF and background

Lieber Dieter,

Great interest, nicely done Dietrich..
Cool too :)
Thanx for the tech info.

Hello Dietrich,

A very attractive and interesting photo, nice composition, excellent color and sharpness. An excellent note too. Thanks for explaining what the white tubes are. I took some photos of a Periodic Cicada right after it emerged from its nymphal "shell" and those white tubes are very visible in those shots too, always wondered what they were.

Thanks,
John
