The common raccoon Procyon lotor is probably best known for its mischievous-looking black face mask. Raccoons are usually a grizzled grey in colour with a tail marked by five to 10 alternating black and brown rings. Body coloration can vary from albino, (white) to melanistic (black) or brown. An annual moult, or shedding, of the fur begins in the spring and lasts about three months.

The head is broad with a pointed snout and short rounded ears measuring 4 to 6 cm. The eyes are black. Total body and tail length for adults averages 80 cm; males are generally 25 percent larger than females. Raccoons in northern latitudes tend to be heavier (6 to 8 kg) than their southern counterparts (4 kg). However, fall weights for adults have reached 28 kg in some areas.
Raccoon populations have grown in areas where agricultural activities are higher. My area has large scale corn production and this is ideal for this species.
Thanks for looking.

Hi Wolf

A superb shot of this raccoon - wonderful eye contact.

Hello Wolf,
nice to see a new picture from you, a fantastic portrait of the Common Raccoon taken from an excellent face to face POV with very good sharpness and very beautiful colours, very well composed.
Best regards

"Innocent!?" HAH! Not hardly! These guys are rascals and bandits to be sure. But they are cute, endearing really, and they can often get a way with their mischievous ways. Who can resist those "innocent eyes"?

This is a beautifully exposed sharp image. I just wish he'd quit staring at me!

Hi Wolf,

It is a cute raccoon. The point of view is showing with precision the details and colors of the face of the raccoon. The subject is well framed. The intensity of the light is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.

Hi Rob,
the title you have given this little guy sure does fit. In High River for the first time in my memory, now has raccoons and I know where they live and hopefully I'll get some shots of them as well. The detail and colour of this photo of yours is excellent and the focus is sharp where it ought to be.I hope that you will upload more goodies as I know you have some real cracking great looking photos lurking in your archives.

Hi Rob

We are missing you here on the site buddy. This is a wonderful facial close up of the
little masked rascal. The details on this Racoon's face are superb. I like how the rest
of the body actually came out rather subtle in comparison with the facial detail. It did
provide a lovely non-distracting BG so one can get a clearer impression of the details
such as the nose, the whiskers, the ears, and those beautiful large eyes. Although the
outcome seems mostly B&W the colour rendition is great.

To you and your loved ones I wish a blessed Christmas and a wonderful 2010.

Well done MF and TFS.

PS. Sorry, but I lost my last smiley when I did an edit on this critique. Next time.

Hi Rob
Wonderful portrait of this cute little Raccoon. I love the detail in his face and his big brown eyes. The dark background shows off his beautiful coat nicely. Fantastic!

Hello Rob,
Contrary to the title I have heard they are NOT so innocent. But your image sure looks like he is, what an outstanding quality portrait of this cute coon. He looks like he would be a little older than I have seen. Thanks for sharing this prize.

Extremely cute shot! The culprit looks very guilty, it is very expressive and makes this an even more fun of an image. Super duper on this one! :)
