Dark Bush-cricket female (Pholidoptera griseoaptera)

Swedish name: Buskvårtbitare, meaning ‘bush wart-biter’ and so-called as it is usually found on bushy vegetation, like roses, nettles or vegetation higher than grass but lower than a meter in height.

This species of bush-cricket has been shown on TN a few times before and each image shown shows it to be a different shade. Though it is usually it is a dark greyish brown some individuals are very light coloured and this one has a reddish brown tone that is rather attractive but makes it less camouflaged.

The more typical colouring is shown in the WORKSHOP, a shot of a male that I took a couple of years ago.
.
It is quite common in the whole of Sweden and most of Europe including most of England and parts of Wales.
It feeds on both insects and plants, including nettles and is found as an adult from the second half of summer to most of the autumn.

This is a female, shown by her sickle-shaped ovipositor that she uses to lay her eggs in the soil. She was sunning herself on an old wooden post when I took this.

This was taken at a distance of about 1.8 meters (6 ft) with my long lens hand held and after moderate cropping it was selectively sharpened.

Hello Ivan,
a very beautiful picture of the Dark Bush-cricket taken with outstanding sharpness and brilliant colours, excellent POV, DOF and composition
TFS
Best regards
Maurizio

A fine female specimen with its characteristic effective ovipositor Ivan, even an f/11 produced a shallow DOF with that long lens, effectively limiting the focal depth only to the cricket, resulting in a pleasant gradual blurrines both in the fore- and background. Excellent work MF, TFS it indeed!
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hej Ivan,
this is unusual colours but it's beautiful.
The DOf is a very shallow for F11 but the whole insect is in good focus. Well composed with nice POV and good sharpness.

Hi Ivan,

Lovely macro capture of the grasshopper with superb details! The rocky structure on which grasshopper is having a good time, gives nice contrast to the subject.
The green blurry BG works well for this kind of capture. The sharpness and POV are perfect.
Very well done, my friend!

Paras

Hello Ivan,
Sorry, I missed this interesting shot of a female bush-cricket. Interesting to read about the colour-variations which make them less camouflaged. Excellent picture also in the WS.
Thanks a lot for your last critique and explanations.
Now it is so cold around here that the insects' season is over:-(
Have a nice afternoon.
Kind regards
Anne
