Today I present this very beautiful grasshopper....the Hooded Grasshopper. I have been tracking to find one since a long time till I chanced upon this one fine afternoon. They look so different from the common grasshoppers we all come across everywhere - the speciality being their hood and they look so royal.

Shot taken hand held in reasonably good natural light. Hope everyone like it.

Unfortunately I could not gather much information about these grasshoppers, hence I will write about them in general.

The Orthoptera are an order of insects with paurometabolous or incomplete metamorphosis, including the grasshoppers, crickets and locusts. Many insects in this order produce sound (known as a "stridulation") by rubbing their wings against each other or their legs, the wings or legs containing rows of corrugated bumps. The tympanum or ear is located in the front tibia in crickets, mole crickets, and katydids, and on the first abdominal segment in the grasshoppers and locusts. These organisms use vibrations to locate other individuals. Grasshoppers are able to fold their wings, placing them in the group Neoptera.

Orthopterans have a generally cylindrical body, with hind legs created for jumping. They have mandibulate mouthparts and large compound eyes, and may or may not have ocelli, depending on the species. The antennae have multiple joints, and are of variable length.

The first and third segments of the thorax are enlarged, while the second segment is much shorter. They have two pairs of wings, which are held overlapping the abdomen at rest. The forewings, or tegmina, are narrower than the hind wings and hardened at the base, while the hind wing is membranous, with straight veins and numerous cross-veins. At rest, the hingwings are held folded fan-like under the forewings. The final two to three segments of the abdomen are reduced, an have single-segmented cerci.

Scientific classification :
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Subclass: Pterygota
Infraclass: Neoptera
(unranked): Exopterygota
Superorder: Orthopteroidea
Order: Orthoptera

Hi Sumon

This is a fantastic macro from you of this very beautiful Hooded Grasshopper! What a great subject you found here and also a terrific side POV that shows that the crest on its back so well!
The more impressive fact is also that you took this shot with a standard kit lens...i've seen many people taking far worse shots with good, professional macro lenses. My humble compliments for this, too!
Exposure-wise, the photo is lovely, with a good lighting, superb natural colors and great sharpness.

Bravo and TSF

Excelente trabajo Sumon: Josep Ignasi.

A fine capture of an interesting looking g.hopper Sumon, haven't seen that species before I'm sure. The simple, uncluttered surroundings draw the attention directly to the Hooded G. caught from a lateral aspect in beautiful colours and great detail. I tried to "illuminate" it a little further in my WS, hope you like it MF. Cheers,

Ciao Sumon, great macro of fantastic grasshopper, very strange creature, I never see before, thanks, wonderful details and superb sharpness, very well done, have a good week end, ciao Silvio

Merhaba Sumon,
harika bir tür ve fotoğraf.
Renkler, kompozisyon ve netlik çok başarılı.
Tebrik ederim.

Hello Sumon,
monumental 3D-like presentation of well camouflaged sturdy grashopper, perfectly recorded from a strictly rectangular approach. With its immaculate composition, its excellent details, beautiful falloff in sharpness at the surrounding leaves, and its delightfully soft natural light this image is a masterpiece of distinctly artistic qualities. Thank you!
With best regards,

Dear Sumon,
The perfect focus offers so many details, it is difficult to decide where to begin!
Th hooks on the legs nearly look like thorns - I wonder - if they are part of the camouflage?
The eye looks like "stuck-on" button.
The hood is similar to a crisp wafer...

Here in South Africa, we find a multitude of insects, which sport the most odd camouflage attires, and every case is different and interesting.

You have presented us with a most beautiful example of clever insects - they had a long time to evolve!

Enjoy the rest of your week,
Kind regards

Hi Sumon

A classical example of mimicry well supported by your interesting notes.

Dear Sumon
A wonderfully camouflaged insect, and I add your work to my theme "Camouflage".

The resemblance to a leave is amazing and I hope saves many lives :-)
The natural colours enhance the sharp details.

Thanks for sharing
Take care
