Another face to face portrait, this time of a White-faced Saki. This photo is taken in Apenheul.

The Apenheul, a kind of zoo in Apeldoorn, opened in 1971 as a small but revolutionary park housing wool-monkeys and other species. It was located in the nature park of Berg en Bos (Mountain and Wood) and proved popular with visitors and primatologists alike, leading to subsequent expansions. In 1976 Gorillas were introduced to the Apenheul, with the first gorilla baby being born three years later. This was only the second healthy baby that had born in captivity in the Netherlands and the third in the entire world. The baby was raised by its own mother, which remains a rare event.

It was the first zoo in the world where apes and monkeys could walk around freely in the forest and between the visitors. It started with just a few species, now it displays more than 30 different primates, among them Bonobo, Gorilla and Orang Utan.

The White-faced Saki (Pithecia pithecia), also known as the Guianan Saki and the Golden-faced Saki, is a species of saki monkey, a type of New World monkey, found in Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, and Venezuela. This species lives in the understory and lower canopy of the forest, feeding mostly on fruits, but also eating nuts, seeds, and insects.

There are two recognized subspecies of this monkey:
Pithecia pithecia pithecia
Pithecia pithecia chrysocephala

Reproductive Biology
In captivity, female White-faced Sakis experience ovarian cycles of approximately 17 days, and a gestational period of 20-21 weeks. Following birth, the mother undergoes a period of lactationally-induced fertility lasting 23 weeks, on average.
Sakis of the Pithecia pithecia species display noticeable sexual dimorphism in their coloration. Females have shorter hair than males, with brownish-grey fur and white or pale brown stripes around the corners of the nose and mouth. Males, on the other hand, have blacker fur, with a reddish-white forehead, face, and throat.

My wife saw this picture, too and instantly started to laugh. When I asked her why she said that this guy looks like me because of the grey moustache...

I agree, he looks great, and you have put him very well on stage, but I nevertheless hope that there is a difference...

Very good portrait of this Saki!

Hello Peter,
Mooi die blik gefotografeerd. Grappige apen.
Goede plek om te fotograferen, Apenheul. Veelal direct contact met de dieren. Ben er een drietal keer geweest. Ik dacht hetzelfde dier te herkennen in mijn foto maar na vergelijken blijkt het toch om een ander te gaan.

Hi Peter

I don't usually comment on zoo shots, but this intrigued me, as did the location, so I surfed the net and learned more about this amazing park. It must be quite amazing to walk amongst the monkeys like that, TFS.
Excellent sharpness and composition.
