Lesser known backyard-pond visitors:

this is another example of a "black" animal and the photographic challenge is to render its blackness well. I tried, as in my post before, to illuminate the animal from the side with diffuse light. This time I did'nt have to worry about reflective surfaces, nor about a bright background or a color-competing flower.

ID: this is a male 30 mm long Black darter (Odonata; Libellulidae; Sympetrum danae (Sulzer, 1776); Schwarze Heidelibelle; Sympétrum noir). The species is not the flashy kind of Dragonflies and is less often presented on TN than others. Still I think its a beauty in its own right. The book that gives the details: K. Dijkstra & R. Lewington, 2006 "Field Guide to the Dragonflies of Britain and Europe", British Wildlife Publ. Milton on Stour UK. Characterizing the species is a black band on the lateral thorax that is enclosing three brighter spots (hard to see here). The species is distributed throughout Europe North of the Alps and Russia. It is not rare.

Technical stuff: During the post-processing in PS I blurred the background, stamped out some dirt grains and darkened the stem. The glare in the eyes was reduced by stamping and feathered painting.

Hello Dietrich,
a fantastic macro shot of Sympetrum danae taken from an excellent interesting POV with superb sharpness, perfect exposurte with marvellous colour tones, a very pleasing dynamic composition
TFS
Have a good week
Maurizio

Hallo Dieter!

As liebs Grüessli

Markus

Black subjects are always challenging. But this picture is sharp
and all details could be seen.Nice one.

Hello Meyerd,
A fine capture of S. danae, a dragonfly that I've failed to see here this year! ;-(
I like your composition and the fine sharp details and beautiful colours.
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hallo Dietrich,
einfach beeindruckend - ich habe bislang erst ein Mal eine schwarze Heidelibelle gesehen - das Bild ist nicht gerade toll geworden. Wogegen Dein Schuß wirklich ins "Schwarze" trifft. Toller Blickwinkel, erstklassige Schärfe, gefällt mir sehr, Danke und Gruß

Hallo Dietrich,

Perfect macro capture of the dragonfly with marvelous details!
I like the sharpness and POV here with great natural colors. A great contrast can be seen between the dragonfly and dark green blurry BG.
Splendid work!

best regards,
Paras

Hallo Dietrich
I like you on your bicycle on your intro page as much as I like your macro images, including this one of the Black darter. The details captured is outstanding, especially the fine body hair. Pity the background is a bit dark as I would have loved to see the detail of the wings a bit better. Unfortunately photography in nature is not a case of pick and chose a backdrop of area for that ideal photo like in a studio. Never the less it is a great macro. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.
Anna
