The New Zealand Christmas Tree –
Pohutukawa – Po-hoo-ta-car-wa (Metrosideros excelsa)

This is the NZ Pohutukawa tree, commonly known as "The New Zealand Christmas Tree". Around Christmas-time it smothers itself with masses of brilliant crimson to deep blood-red flowers. And from the look of this one, it seems to want to do the same in July.

I found this one coming out in blossom along the cliff above our Bay. Only one branch of one tree had these buds just beginning to open. But I also noticed that some of the leaves, not all, on this stem are turning quite a lime colour – definitely not the norm for these Pohutukawa trees. I’ve got no idea what’s wrong with it. But the flowers are beautiful, don’t you think?

The leaves are deep green (except for those on this stem) and leathery, shiny on top, with a thick white tomentum underneath. The flower clusters appear on the ends of branchlets, with many brilliant red stamens, like a soft brush, tipped with yellow anthers. Birds love the flowers, as they are full of nectar. When the stamens fall they form a soft red carpet under the tree.

Pohutukawa is very much a coastal tree; they thrive near the sea, easily withstanding strong wind, salt spray and drought and are rarely found inland unless planted. The tree hardly ever grows straight and is more likely to have many short trunks with tortuous branches. Usually found growing on cliffs with the branches sometimes reaching in the water and the great roots spread along the cliff-face above holding it in place.

Lovely light Janice! Composition is great and it does indeed look like a 3d picture. Lovely colors and I have only one nit: the middle spot of the flower is a bit oe. Good POV. Well done & TFS!

Hello Janice

Nice shot of this early bloom, or is te late? Great POV, excellent depth of colour. Good details. My Kowhai tree has a beautiful rich yellow glow due to it being full of flowers.... very strange! Well done. Thanks.

I like how the sunlight seems to be shining on just this flower with the shadows in the background. Very clear sharp photo of this interesting flower, so different with it's spikes of red.
