Rosie and I decided to take a walk this afternoon along the Ohio Erie Canal Towpath. We spotted plenty of Mallards along the way, but this little muskrat caught my eye as he was foraging for tender plant shoots in the marshy water.

Muskrats have gorgeous fur coats, which in my opinion equal that of the mink. Their sleek chestnut brown fur glistens in the sunlight, if you are lucky enough to catch one out in the open during the day time.

Muskrats have long been sought after for their beautiful fur coats, and to a smaller extent their meat. The meat has sometimes been referred to as Marsh Rabbit, since the term rat doesn't seem very appetizing.

Muskrats are considered a nuisance to many, because their burrowing tunnels can undermine waterways. This can cause leaks to occur in ponds and dikes.

Dear Ron!

When I first saw your picture, I thought it was a Beaver. I didn't know the English name for the Beaver and up to today totally ignorred the existence of the Muskrat. Thanks to your beautiful image and the notes I've learned about this interesting animal.

Kind regards

Hello Ron,
Although I don't like Muskrats, they destroy the environment where I live, this is a great photo in splendid warm Autumn colours. Amazing structure in the water. Excellent sharp details and composition.

hello Ron,
A picture with a lot of atmosphere..a covered day and a wonderful encounter. I like the natural appearance of this shot. I can't imagine to eat the meat of this creatures!
Thanks also for your note.
Kind regards

What a lucky catch this one was one!!..My dad and I used to go there to get brine shrimp in order to feed dads tropical fish....there was an old mill and waterwheel not far. Very nicely seen. I am glad parts of Ohio are retaining their rich history...and that good photographers take the time to register them!
