This is a close up of an Australian native "Kangaroo Paw". The flowers form in small clusters on a long stem. (These stems can get to 3m in height) The red ones behind are not yet opened. As they open up the bud splits and the individual petals look like claws. THe flower at this stage has a curved shape and looks just like the front paws of kangaroos. I will add a photo tomorrow of a yellow version which shows the flower not quite open.
They thrive in the sandstone well drained soils which are very nutrient poor and the rainfall is low. In gardens they often die due to over watering or feeding.
There are many many varieties of this plant and also many hybrids. |

very nice shot! I love the sharpness and DOF of the photo.. saturation can be bumped up a bit IMO... but over all very good shot! well done TFS
