[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I know some great shooters use a black card in order to produce a nice b(l)ackground. Yesterday, making believe I’m one of these great photographers, I bought a piece of a rather thick black paper (20 square centimeters) and headed towards Mocambo Park.

The first difficulty I faced was to deal with the camera and with the black card at the same time. The bugs were in a place where I wouldn’t have the chance to position the card and then, using both hands, take the picture. Therefore, awkwardly, I tried to hold the card with one hand and shoot with the other (how difficult it is to be an amateur…)

The result can be checked out above. At the moment I held the card where I wanted it to be, the damselfly (I guess it's the same I've posted some days ago) simply left the leaf it was on and chose the edge of the card as a temporary place. As I would take the shot by using Tv mode (speed priority) and had already chosen a high speed in order to prevent shaking, I just took the shot.

As for the dark background, I decided to try it with some flowers. I couldn’t find one in a satisfactory position, so that I had to hold the card with the left hand. I intend to post one of these flower shots tomorrow.

Those who are experienced with such procedures, please, feel free to give me some hints, tips or insights about this matter. Not only about the “card issue”, but also about the “dark background production issue”. After all, it’s my intention to have a professional equipment someday.

fantastic shot Livio,
very good composing shot, very good pov and a fantastic dof, very good colours too, well done my friend,
gr. Jaap

I red your note with much interest, Livio. Create a black BG is a very good idea used for macro shots, but, as you mentionned, it's difficult when you only have two hands. Besides that, it's nearly impossible with flying insects. With damsels, it's only possible when they are mating (I did some very close shots like that yesterday, but without cardboard). You really had luck with your shot, as it's perfectly in focus on the entire subject. The light is wonderful here and contributes to show sharp details. No nits here.

Great shot Livio. The details and focus are spot on. The lighting, BG and composition are excellent. This has a reall feeling that the damselfly is about to take off. Very nice shot.

Dear Livio,
The picture is just great. Background or no background! I personally feel that in photographing wildlife if props are used one loses the feel for whats natural. nature is not always perfect, and i believe photographs should also reflect that.
Keep the good work livio

Great story Livio ;-) As we can see piece of dark paper works great in another way, too. Beautifull composition and details. Sharp, with superb BG and great note.

She looks like she's going to do a highdive off your card Livio. So good of you to bring it along for her. I've never used one, so sorry, I can't help.
I love the natural BG for her. She's very sharp, perfect details and colours. Well done.

Hello Livio, Very good details, DOF and sharpness..Well composed and a great POV..I can just picture you trying to do all this at the same time! You make me smile ;-) Well done my friend!
P.S. Thanx for the pics of Freud, he's a cool lookin' dog!

Hello again Livio!
Wonderful macro.BG,POV,details and framing are perfect. Thanks for sharing.

I never used the 'card', so I've no idea how to do it.
The damselfly sitting on the 'BG' looks great, details are perfect and colours very good.
The real BG of this shot has great colours and it seems that the damselfly prefers it more than black ;-)
I like the photo very much.
