After saving up for a couple of years, I finally took the plunge and bought a new lens, a Sigma 150-500mm. So after a few test shots in the backyard I went camping for the weekend in Barrington Tops National Park. On the walk around Poleblue swamp we found a pair of breeding Flame Robins (Petroica phoenicea). The male was unusually co-operative and allowed us to approach to within 7 metres and I was able to get over 20 shots of him while he hunted the neighbourhood for insects. I was pretty happy with these results, which were hand-held.
Flame Robin is restricted to foothill and mountains of south-eastern Australia. Open eucalypt woodland and farmland are its preferred habitat with birds moving to higher altitudes in summer and lower altitudes in winter.
The nest is a rough cup shape, constructed from bark strips, moss and spiders webs and lined with animal fur and feathers. They usually lay 3 eggs, which are greeny-blue in colour. Nesting occurs between August and January.

Hello Chris,
This capture of a flame Robin is not only an indication of your skills but also that you invested in a fine lens.
Technically superb with a great OOF Bg, the telephoto bonus.
Hope the forest fires in the SE don't affect the staus of this rare and striking species.
Look forward to more from this new Sigma!

Hi Chris

An exceptional capture of this beautiful Flame Robin. It is red-hot and I just love it.

Technically well managed and produced. A spot-on DOV took care of all the detail.
It also ensured a well OOF and splendidly isolated BG which complimented the bird.
The colour saturation is slightly bumped up, yet still perfectly natural. The pleasing
composition is well proportioned while the subject provided a lovely posture.

Well done and TFS.

Am glad you got the new lens.
LOVELY indeed.
Good notes.
