Cranefly - Nephrotoma crocata

For the first time I spotted this Cranefly last summer. It was quite big, 16-18 mm (0,7 inches) and was really striking with its black head and yellow markings.

According to 'the books' it is normally found in damp areas in deciduous woods, so this one had probably gone astray into the Pine forest where it ended up in our garden!! The larvae live off decaying organic material. It is only found in the southern part of Sweden and is common in Europe.

Hi Ulla. A sharply focus close up of this colourful Cranefly. Which you took with fine detail and rich colours. The wings have a shine to them . it stands out well from the green leaf. Well taken TFS.

Hello Ulla,
Excellent macro of the Cranefly.
Nicely composed and I like the pose with the fly on the diagonal. The details are just superb.Very nice colours pallette.
Best regards Siggi

This fly is all gangly limbs, Ulla, and its legs are extraordinarily long. It is so big it seems to be straddling the leaf with some effort.
You have captured it well from a dorsal point of view. The entire subject is in perfect focus and stands out sharply against the leaf.
Thanks and regards.
Ram

Hallo Ulla
I very much like the aerial view in which you captured this crane fly, this way showing the thorax, the head, eyes and antennas from another angle. The wings are really striking, the shiny, glasslike wings a delight to look at. Detail of the matchstick black legs and its tang against the green leave is well seen. I like the shadow of the wings seen on the leave. The image as a whole is well focused and the clarity is super. Indeed beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.

Hello Ulla.

Very sharp shot of this strange insect.
Colors are beautiful and sitting on this way on the leave gives it a very nice look.

Hello Ulla,

An very good macro shot from this insexct with good pov and dof.
I think I never been seen such insect.
Fine natural colours and good of details.

Gert

Was away for a few days and almost missed this gem Ulla, the execution of your photomacrography is faultless my friend, the resulting image finely detaied, seems the right wing was somehow broken, maybe that is why it "went astray" in the first place...
Best regards,
Mehmet

Hello Ulla,
I just noticed that you have been very active and showed interesting and original pictures. Fascinating and not well-known creatures, the Craneflies. I never have seen a colorful species like the one you present, even if in your note you say that it is common.
Very good composition showing N. crocata on a beautifully shaped leaf.
Un grand merci. Ici il neige jusqu'en plaine..l'hiver est là!
Amicalement
Anne
