Long-legged backyard inhabitants (6):

This is a little known Crane fly (Diptera; Tipulidae; Tipula pustulata Pierre, 1920; no English, German or French name; Gelbe Schnake?). This male measures about 22 mm and, uncommon for Tipulids, occurs in late spring and visits flowers. (In this case it sits on Nettle).

For ID, the URL www.commanster.eu/commanster/Insects/Flies/Tipulidae.html was consulted. In this species the male is yellow colored and the wings are of smoky transparency except for a brown and white stigma. A "First" on TN. The female is darker. I found reports of the species for Belgium and France but it is certainly distributed more widely. I will have to consult the Swiss cartography center in Neuchâtel to make sure about the ID.

Hello Dietrich,
Another excellent macro in your 'long-legs' series!
The features of this species of Tipulid are well shown with fine sharpness and use of flash without undesireable reflections.
The composition on the nettle plant is pleasing too.
Thanks and have a good week,

Hi, dear Dietrich.
I am very touched with your congratulations. Thanks a lot.
This summer I have photographed this (or similar) species first time too. However, they were not so extreme close-up as yours. Wonderful composition of the shot and selected POV. Subject is really great as well as extreme DOF and terrific sharpness/details of the insect and all leaves. As usual for you flash work is the best. Bravo.

Beautiful macro Dietrich! And so unusual and unique! Tipulidae are so rarely presented in TN gallery that this is really a very special presentation!
Very good details, sharpness, DOF and colours. Bravo!
All the best from Lodz,
