[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
During our stay at Port Orford we decided to make a quick visit to the famous Redwoods in Northern California. It was only a few hours drive so it was a must see thing.

On our way down the coast a lot of sea fog greeted us and I was hoping that it would stay like this since fog filters the light to a much more ideal situation. But as soon as we crossed the state border, the fog was gone and the bright summer sun welcomed us. Not that I don't like the sun, but bright light in a dens forest is not a photographic ideal.

I didn't want to return to Port Orford without a photo. So I went for the creative option and made several exposures to create a bigger dynamic range. In this result I blended 4 exposures and merged another into it. The result is less over exposure and less under exposure. Although some spots still look a little hot.

I guess the exif data is from one of the more brighter photos.

Hello Niek,
Very well done - not easy to cram these giants into a photo!! I've never seen them myself but it musts be exciting to walk around in this forest. I like the ferns on the ground too and the beautiful light and colours.
Many thanks and cheers, Ulla

Hi Niek.
Excellent job. You managed to get a fine result using 4 shot. Have you used HDR software or you made this shot at FS? Wonderful scene, impressive tress, great details and total exposure. Well done and TFS.

Hi Niek,
you presented a forest here. All is very well with the picture. I find forests really challenging to photograph, there are usually problems with light, contrasts, angles, size, lack of perspective and so on. You must have been standing at a clearing, the sun puts a nice focus on the upper parts of trees. TFS.
My best regards
Dietrich

Really majestic trees portrayed expertly from this perspective Niek, the vertical composition displays the forms and colourations of these beauties perfectly indeed!
TFS and cheers,
Mehmet

Hello Niek,
Your photo gives us a greater perspective of just how massive these beautiful trees really are. Love the composition and your choice of exposure. Wonderful detail with very natural colors. TFS.

Hi Niek

Majestic giants. A wonderful capture of these "old men" of the forest. Technically you really
did a great job to assemble this final result. I still don't know how you guys manage to do
all that fancy stuff like "blended 4 exposures" and "merged another", but the end product
shows you know what you were doing and it came out just perfect. Your high standards
cause you to be slightly "over" critical of your own work thus saying things like "Although
some spots still look a little hot". You probably referred to the couple of whitish areas on
the big tree in the centre, but from where I sit and look there is no need to be concerned.
As I said, it came out just perfect. I like the ferns which you have included on the forest
floor. It provides a good perspective and sense of scale. Not that one really needs to have
a reference of any nature to be able to appreciate how enormous these Goliaths truly are.

Well done MF and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Niek

I have missed this picture as I'm not one of those who post every day... I'm glad to discover it because it's a superb picture. I'm delighted by the simplicity of the composition as well as the one of the subject. You have created a good perspective with the vertical composition and the ferns in the foreground that are pointing to the trees. Moreover, the lighting - not easy in a forest with the interplay of bright and dark - is perfect and has preserved the details in the brighter parts.

Kind regards

Markus

Hi Niek

So this is your version of a HDR :) Looks nice...and very natural i may add :) It really feels as if this is viewed through a human's eye and processed by a healthy human brain :))
You did great to try this approach here and you processed it well. I also like the composition, with the trees all leading the eye towards that opening and sun lit canopy.
The ferns in the FG are a nice touch, too - adding some well placed texture to the scene and also completing the primordial and ancient feel of this forest.
Well done my friend.

Bravo and TFS

Hi Niek,
a real feeling of looming height here from your well chosen POV. The Ferns add alot to the very prehistoric feel this shot has. I don't personally think that the brighter parts of the photo are that distracting and for me, actually add to the feeling of difference between light and shadow that is so hard to capture in a forest. You have done these giants proud, especially with the flawless clarity and detail, well done.

Hi Niek,
The beauty of Redwood National Park is actually not very easy to capture in photos, it is something one has to experienc walking in this forrest of giants and the ferns cover ground, the misty and cool air in the canyon and shadow of the trees. You have done very well here, the height of the tree are well depicted using the vertical format and a POV looking up with a wide angel len. Colors and light is beautiful and absolutely natural. Thanks.
Way

Wonderfully framed shot. It looks like the trees are scaling the side of the photo on the right. Love the perspective as well and the ferns help bring that together. TFS Trevor
