Kinnikinnick
Ericaceae (heath family)
Arctostaphylos uva-ursi
Bearberry

Kinnikinnick is native to Alberta. It's a low growing dwarf shrub with spreading branches and is known to spread several metres wide. It's grows best in sandy dry soil.

In May and June the small white to pinkish flowers appear in small hanging clusters. Later in the season, red berries appear which are a favorite of bears. The fruit looks like a miniature apple.

Tea made from the berries was used as a diuretic and to treat persistent coughs by First Nations people. The plant is rich in tannin and arbutin and should be used with caution. The leaves can be used to tan hides.

Hi Janice,
this photo is wonderful as it is a feast for the eyes. The texture of it is what catches my eye and the colour as well and it sure is a whole lot better than the bitter cold we are going through right now.The focus is very sharp as all the details can be seen so clearly,a nice detail are the two seed cones on either side of the old wood. The colour is fantastic and was this photo taken on a cloudy day?
Thanks for sharing a fine photo with us.

I grow it in my garden, Janice, as a native plant from... I didn't know it was native from Alberta. I like it, it grows so well. Thanks, the picture is lovely with the cone and the leaves and the log that's coverd with kinnikinnick! Merci!

Hi Janice

An interesting shot of this Kinnikinnick (Bearberry) with interesting bits of other stuff
growing in between it all. The piece of dry wood and the pine cones also provides some
additional focus. The image show nice deep colours and good details.

Well done and TFS.

Hi Janice!

It's a pleasure to discover this delicate picture. I like it very much, especially for the plain beauty and the simple composition. It is aesthetic and serene, just pleasant. I also appreciate the notes describing the essential characteristics of the plant in a succint way.

Kind regards

Markus

Hello Janice,
A wonderfully composed image full of fine detail and natural colors. I would love to see this plant when in full bloom with it's white and pinkish flowers. The two pine cones add a special touch to an already beautiful shot. Great work!!

Hello My Friend and Happy New Year,
This is beautiful Janice. The colors are well saturated, the composition is spot on and just the feel of the image is so peaceful. The contrast between the old and the new, the living and the dead. Great eye my dear, straight to my favorites.
Rick
