[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Lion Tailed Macaque(LTM) got its name owing to Lion's tail similarity. This is an endemic species of Wetern Ghats, more specifically Ananmalai Hill Ranges. This is one of the Endangered species of the primates family.
LTMs are very shy and live in upper canopy of the forest. They seldom come to plains. They are basically arboreal species(tree living). With many forest being destroyed for tea plantations, agriculture the habitat of the LTM are threatened.Owing to loss of habitat, hunting and the population of LTM has started dwindling.(Now steps have been taken to increase the LTM population). As like other primates,LTM live in a small group.Few males and many female and children form a group.Alpha male(oldest of the group) leads the group.Jack fruits are one of its favorite diet.Only the males have the strong canines to rip open the thick outer shell of the jackfruits.
