Common Kingfisher
(Alcedo atthis)
Scientific classification
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Aves
Order: Coraciiformes
Suborder: Alcedines
Families
Alcedinidae
Halcyonidae
Cerylidae

Kingfishers are small bright colored birds of the three families Alcedinidae (river kingfishers), Halcyonidae (tree kingfishers), and Cerylidae (water kingfishers). There are roughly 90 species of kingfisher. All have large heads, long, sharp, pointed bills, short legs, and stubby tails. They are found throughout the world.

Categorization
The etymology of kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) is obscure; the term comes from king's fisher, but why that name was applied is not known.
The taxonomy of the three families is complex and rather controversial. Although commonly assigned to the order Coraciiformes, from this level down confusion sets in.
The kingfishers were traditionally treated as one family, Alcedinidae with three subfamilies, but following the 1990s revolution in bird taxonomy, the three former subfamilies are now usually elevated to familial level. That move was supported by chromosome and DNA-DNA hybridisation studies, but challenged on the grounds that all three groups are monophyletic with respect to the other Coraciiformes. This leads to them being grouped as the suborder Alcedines.
The tree kingfishers have been previously given the familial name Dacelonidae but Halcyonidae has priority. This group derives from a very ancient divergence from the ancestral stock. Even tropical South America has only five species plus wintering Belted Kingfisher. In comparison, the tiny African country of The Gambia has eight resident species in its 120 by 20 mi. (192 by 32 km) area.
The six species occurring in the Americas are four closely related green kingfishers in the genus Chloroceryle and two large crested kingfishers in the genus Megaceryle, suggesting[citation needed] that the sparse representation in the western hemisphere evolved from just one or two original colonising species.
The smallest species of kingfisher is the African Dwarf Kingfisher (Ispidina lecontei), which averages at 10.4 g and 10 cm (4 inches). The largest overall is the Giant Kingfisher (Megaceryle maxima), at an average of 355 g (13.5 oz) and 45 cm (18 inches). However, the familiar Australian kingfisher known as the Laughing Kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae) may be the heaviest species, since large individuals exceeding 450 g (1 lb) are not rare.
Habitat
Kingfishers live in both woodland and wetland habitats. Kingfishers that live near water hunt small fish by diving. They also eat crayfish, frogs, and insects. Wood kingfishers eat reptiles. Kingfishers of all three families beat their prey to death, either by whipping it against a tree or by dropping it on a stone.

They are able to see well both in air and under water while swimming. Their eyes also have evolved an egg-shaped lens able to focus in the two different environments.

The Old World tropics and Australasia are the core area for this group. Europe and North America north of Mexico are very poorly represented with only one common kingfisher (Common Kingfisher and Belted Kingfisher respectively), and a couple of uncommon or very local species each: (Ringed Kingfisher and Green Kingfisher in the southwest USA, Pied Kingfisher and White-breasted Kingfisher in SE Europe).

A White-throated Kingfisher
[edit] Legend
Halcyon which gives its name to the family Halcyonidae is a mythical bird similar to the kingfisher.

"Ovid and Hyginus both also make the metamorphosis the origin of the etymology for "halcyon days", the seven days in winter when storms never occur. They state that these were originally the seven days each year (either side of the shortest day of the year) during which Alcyone ([as a kingfisher]) laid her eggs and made her nest on the beach and during which her father Aeolus, god of the winds, restrained the winds and calmed the waves so she could do so in safety. The phrase has since become a term used to describe a peaceful time generally."

Hi Omer,

Great picture of these fighting kingfishers. Wonderful colour and very good detail on the front kingfisher, although the back kingfisher is a bit soft. Still a well captured moment.
Great capture and TFS

Hello Omer,
Many salams my brother, this is a fantastic photo and shows how photographers in their enthusiasm are present at the right moment to take a wondrous and everlasting shot. This one is superb with sharp focus, showing birds fighting for the favourite perch instead of a fish, I think. A fine shot in all respects, thanks for sharing and thanks for all your words of encouragement...take care...warmest regards/Abid

hello Omer

Aoutch ! what a superb dynamic and action photo of the Kingfishers,
fine POV and the way both are framed on the image,
the first one is superbly focused with great sharpness
and details, the background (i am talking the one after the 2nd Kingfisher)
it is beautifully blurred to not disturb the foreground,
and ah if you could also put in focus the the 2nd one
the photo would be more excellent and beautiful, TFS

Merhaba Ömer,
A fine and beautiful action shot of two rival male Kingfishers showing aggresion. The composition, colours, sharpness where in focus, and neutral BG are excellent.
A very attarctive shotto start the year!
Thanks and best wishes,

Hi Omer,

I keep looking for a new post from you and today was the day! These arguing Kingfishers were worth waiting for. But you can always be counted on for something very special. Your timing was perfect to capture them in these positions. The opened beaks and spread wings are fantastic. Beautiful iridescent colors and superfine details. Superb background and composition. I'm wondering which was first - seeing them or hearing them.

Jane

Hi Omer,
A photo full of good technical skills; background is impeccable and birds close-up is amazing, full of movement and perfect light. Very good and excellent primary focus, well medium blur in the background (as second bird). A really good photo set, congratulations MF!

Hello Omer,
Along with the Bee-eaters, this species has to be some of the most beautifully colored birds posted on TN. I have never gotten a close-up shot of a Kingfisher here in the US., but I don't think they are nearly as colorful as these. A super shot in every aspect!! TFS.

Omer, first of all, let me wish you and your family a Happy New Year!
My sporadic appearances leave me frustrated at times because I miss a lot nowadays.
Mercifully, I'm almost on time to admire yet another of your great shots this evening. These two Kingfishers havine a heated argument have been captured extremely well in this dramatic situation. The one showing us its back is so excited its wings are spread wide to express its frustration, thereby giving us the opportunity to appreciate their beauty and symmetry.
You are a genius of a nature photographer and it is a privilege to see your work off and on.

Hallo Omer
What a stunning moment you have captured! The detail not only of the action but of the birds in particular is striking. The colours of the feathers are a delight to look at and the wingspan of the one in the front very impressive. You have captured the motion very well. A bright, action filled image with lots more of details to appreciate, than I have mentioned. I like it very much. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.
