Class: Insecta

Order: Lepidoptera

(unranked): Rhopalocera

Superfamily: Papilionoidea

Family: Nymphalidae

Subfamily: Heliconiinae

Genus: Heliconius

Species: H. charithonia

Heliconius charithonia, commonly known as the Zebra Longwing or Zebra Heliconian, is a species of butterfly belonging to the subfamily Heliconiinae of the Nymphalidae. It was declared the official butterfly for the state of Florida in the United States in 1996.
The butterfly ranges over parts of North, Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean. In North America the butterfly is found in the southern parts of the United States including Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina. In South and Central America, it has been recorded in Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela.
The caterpillar feeds on Yellow Passionflower (Passiflora lutea), Corky-stemmed Passionflower (Passiflora suberosa), and Two-flower Passionflower (Passiflora biflora). The adults are unusual among butterflies in that they eat pollen as well as sip nectar. This ability contributes to their longevity—3 months as an adult.Because of their relatively long lifespan and their activity throughout the day, this is a popular species with butterfly houses. Another unusual feature is that adults roost in groups of up to 70, and return to the same roost each evening.
In some publications the butterfly is referred to as Heliconius charitonius, but this is either a lapsus calami or unjustified emmendation of the original name given by Linnaeus in 1767, Papilio charithonia. Cramer in 1777 was apparently the first to publish this incorrect name. Godman & Salvin in 1901 referred to the species as H. charithonie [sic].

Ciao Luciano!
Beautiful capture of this "zebra"!
I like the slight underneath POV you manage to get here, to bring details both from the wings and body.
The scattered colours of the flowers adds an extra visual appealing to the picture.
Good pic and thanks a lot for share it,

Hello Luciano,
Great photo of this butterfly. Very beautiful contrasting colours and good sharpness. Nice POV, pose and surroundings.

Ciao Luciano.

Hello Luciano,
Hope you will be doing fine. I was busy and could not comment on many photos but I'll be able to catch up, I hope. This is a fine shot of a very lovely butterfly which are not quite common in my part of the world. The angle and the shot seemed quite difficult but you have captured the wings well...the flowers look great as well. Thanks a lot for sharing with a good note as well...take care...warmest regards/abid

Bonjour Luciano,

Impressive capture of this slightly damaged specimen of an exotic Butterfly from your trip, Luciano.
I like the natural surroundings in which you shot this subject. It is so very green in Central America at this time of the year.

Hello Luciano,
Thanks for appreciating the treepie...wish you a very happy New Year 2010. I like the way you present these beautiful insects with great composition, POV and scientific notes. Thanks for sharing.

Ciao Lucioano,
Bravo!

Hello Luciano,

An excellent macro with beautiful colors, sharpness & fine details. Well taken, composed & presented. TFS & best wishes...MF!

bonjour Luciano

Hello Luciano, great macro shot of this colourful butterfly with nice details and composition.

Hi Luciano,
wow...the black and white really stands out beautifully. i wish it opens its wings widely.
nevertheless, it never spoil this shot. the sharpness and clarity is still at its best.

Ciao Luciano,

You know I love butterfly shots, but I'm not so experienced in taking them. This one's not only a fantastic masterpiece, but a real treasure / rarity for me: this is the 1st time ever I saw a b-fly macro taken from this POV, with this pose of the insect where both wings are in focus or at least razor-sharp. Colors, lights, compo, everythin g's second to none, not to mention awesome contrast (which is also helped by the well chosen b/w frame). Absolutely a masterpiece - the least I can do is bookmarking the image as one of my faves. I wish to give more points.
Tfs this fabolous capture, friendly regards from Ungheria, Ladislao

Hello Luciano.
